I'm not really sure where to start picking schools. I looked through MSAR and filled out admit.org and my stats seem to be in the 90th percentile for all schools. But I'm looking at other people's ECs and they have crazy amount of hours and publications, especially those aiming at the same schools. So the list admit.org gave me and what I made from MSAR based purely off stats seems really and unrealistically ambitious. I'm thinking I should aim for lower stats schools in the hopes that a higher MCAT/GPA will get me in. I'm hoping people can help me create a more realistic school list. I'm thinking around 40 schools? Not sure if that's realistic. I really do not want to reapply.

I would prefer somewhere urban, coastal, and on the colder side but tbh I'll go to the middle of the desert in Arizona if it means I get to go to med school.

I have CASPER booked for June 27 and PREVIEW booked for July 24. UCLA is the only preview school though, so if I get a better school list, I might just cut out UCLA.

Current unrealistic school list:
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Harvard Medical School
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons
Duke University School of Medicine
Stanford University School of Medicine
University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine
Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine
Yale School of Medicine
University of Michigan Medical School
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
Weill Cornell Medicine
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
Northwestern University The Feinberg School of Medicine
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
University of Chicago Division of the Biological Sciences The Pritzker School of Medicine
Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine
University of Virginia School of Medicine
NYU Grossman School of Medicine
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine
Boston University Aram V. Chobanian & Edward Avedisian School of Medicine

My first time here, so apologies for any mistakes in formatting/etiquette.

You shouldn't need to apply to 40 schools with your stats. You need to match your mission fit with the schools on your list. It's not clear what that is since your service orientation activities are weak in my opinion; 70 hours is low for a candidate with your metrics, especially if your want to play ball with brand school applicants.

To that end, I don't know why you are applying to UCLA, and if that's enough to avoid PREview, then cancel.

You don't want to do rural medicine in Maine, I figure?

I have 270 volunteer hours, which isn’t much better but it is a bit better. Not particular keen on Maine rural medicine, no. Thanks for your help!

Virtual tutoring is not in-person service to alleviate others distress so I don't factor in the 200 hours of that activity into this bucket.

So why do you want to be a doctor? What do you expect to do?

Not 100% certain, but I think I'd like to do in-patient medicine. I liked shadowing crit care/pulm so if I get into medical school, I would probably prepare to match internal medicine. Not 100% sure if I like all the aspects of academic medicine but I think I would like to continue to do research.

I suggest these schools from your list:
