• Paid ED scribe at rural community hospital x8 months (700 hours, no longer working here)

Research Experience

• Research Assistant in psych lab for one semester, 50 hours
• Just joined biomed lab ~1-3 hours a week, projected 100 hours
• no pubs

Shadowing

• ER shadowing as scribe (700 hours)
• OB GYN high risk clinic shadowing (50 hours)

Non-clinical volunteering

• Tour guide for my university x3 years (~100 hours)
• Relay for Life (raises money for American Cancer Society) committee member x1 year, team captain x2 years (~100 hours)
• Nursing home volunteer (play games, hang out), ~50 hours
• Camp counselor for Christian-based camp for 3rd-5th graders, many from underprivileged backgrounds (~180 hours)

How much did you push your rural health interests? VCOM should be listed (both MD and DO) in case I missed it.

Yes, VCOM is listed for my DO apps! I’m applying next month for the 2022-2033 cycle and trying to get a good idea of where I should send my application.

I have about 3000 hours of community service for my EMS agency, and about half of it is clinical (actually going on calls/treating patients), but the other half is putting administrative work into the recruitment/retention committee that I founded and now chair to make sure the agency continues to thrive for years to come. It is a 100% volunteer agency, and we don’t have to charge our patients because of that. I’m really passionate about keeping EMS transports free for the community I serve and have put a lot of hours into finding ways to recruit and retain volunteers. I guess I’m not really sure how to split it up on an application for non-clinical vs clinical volunteering. Thanks for the reply!

I wasn't even going to bother applying to VTC because they are incredibly research heavy. Admissions staff says my app is great for primary care oriented schools, weaker for research ones. Are there schools I should add or remove?

I defer to my colleagues who make lists. But how about the Jesuit schools? Were you ever involved with any rural clinics where medical students rotated?

Your list contains several schools that take few to no OOS students without significant ties (Louisville, FSU, South Carolina etc). And the HBCUs are unlikely as you do not fit the mission.
