Hello everyone, I am a re-applicant this year, and looking for some help on my school list (how many DO versus MD schools, any specific schools I should definitely apply to, etc).

I'm currently finishing up my first gap year which I spent scribing with a high-risk pregnancy specialist and volunteering in a non-clinical setting. Last year I applied to 12 schools, all allopathic, and got zero interview invites. I think my main flaw was that I was complete pretty late for some of the schools (around September and even October for 2-3 schools). What tripped me up and made me late was the secondaries. Also my school list may have had a few too many reach-ish schools with a 507 MCAT (like GW, Georgetown and Dartmouth).

If any of you have any feedback on what my school list should look like/how many schools I should apply to/whether it is worth reapplying right now, I would welcome any. I think it is worth reapplying especially due to my scribing and volunteering experiences over this past year, and my much improved MCAT score.

STATS
cGPA: 3.88 and sGPA: 3.87

2016 MCAT- 507 (C/P 128, CARS 129, Bio 128, P/S 125)

2018 MCAT- 515 (C/P 130, CARS 130, Bio 127, P/S 128)

State of res. is VA

ORM (Asian-Indian)

Female

Clinical experiences

  • Scribed full-time for 1 year with specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Volunteer - large hospital (L&D, ED, PACU about 200 hours)
Volunteering non-clinical
  • Crisis counselor - current and ongoing role, (about 80 hours so far, will be closer to 100 by the time I apply)
  • Hospice - companionship to an Alzheimer’s patient for (about 50 hours)
Shadowing:
  • About 1 month shadowing in New Dehli, India (OB/GYN, hospital GI, cardiology, ED) (About 120 hours)
Research:
  • Paid position as a spent as a research assistant/working on various projects - not a very significant experience since I didn’t get my name on any papers/didn’t really have my own project (About 500 hours)
Other meaningful EC's
  • 4+ years of experience on dance team specifically with choreography, which I am currently still involved in (1000+ hours)
  • Lots of tutoring and TA experience (about 300 hours)
LORs
I have a committee letter from my undergrad, as well as an assortment of letters from professors, and a letter from the MD I scribed for this year

PS Theme
personal adversity and how this ties into my passion for womens health (being a resource for/healing/empowering women)

Potential school list
I plan on applying to all VA MD schools except VT Carilion (It's research heavy and I'm not very passionate about research) - I would be a reapplicant to most VA schools minus UVA
GW (reapp)
Georgetown (reapp)
VCOM
WVU
Wake Forest (reapp)
Loyola (reapp)

There are more on my list of course, and I plan to make the list about 20 schools, with a mix of MD and DO (beyond 20 it becomes too expensive for me).

Thank you for reading this long post! Any opinions on my chances (how competitive I am) as a reapplicant and my school list would be much appreciated - like any for sure OOS schools I should or should not apply to, the amount of DO schools, and any other suggestions. :)

Thanks so much! That is super helpful. Do you know if being a re-applicant at Virginia Tech, VCU, EVMS, Wake Forest, Georgetown, GW, Loyola, and Drexel would affect my chances?

If anyone has any other advice on the rest of my app/what other experiences I may try to seek out while I'm applying this year, I'd love to hear them. My plan right now is to Scribe in an ER/do a MA type of job while continuing to volunteer with the crisis line and dance/choreograph. I'm thinking, is it a good idea to do rescue squad while also having a full time job? Any opinions are welcome.
