Hello! I am a senior in college who would like some advice on how to improve my application for the 2025-2026 cycle. This will be my first time applying, and I highly prefer going to a school in Texas. I know my weak point is definitely my MCAT (especially CARS), so I would like some advice on how I can strengthen other parts of my application so that I can be a competitive applicant for Texas Schools. Thank you so much!

  1. TMDSAS GPA: 3.88
    TMDSAS sGPA: 3.84
  2. First Attempt: 499 (127/120/126/126) – March 2024
    Second Attempt: 511 (131/123/128/129) – August 2024
  3. State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US)
    • TX RESIDENT
  4. Ethnicity and/or race
    • ORM
  5. Undergraduate institution or category
    • Texas Undergraduate Public Institution
  6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
    • 600 hours Pharmacy Technician
    • 200 hours Clinic Volunteer
  7. Research experience and productivity
    • 300 hours Wetlab, no publications
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented
    • 40 hours – (One specialty)
    • 50 hours – (Different Specialty)
  9. Non-clinical volunteering
    • 150 hours – Food Bank Volunteer (ongoing)
    • 12 hours – Homeless Shelter (ongoing)
  10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    • 120 hours – Teaching a class of younger students
    • 100 hours – Tutoring College Students (ongoing)
  11. Relevant honors or awards
    • Nothing much, have been on a special Dean’s List for 3.75+ GPA every semester so far
  12. Anything else not listed you think might be important
    • I was planning to apply during the 2024-2025 cycle, but ultimately decided not to.
    • Will be getting a Committee Letter from my school
    • LOR: 2 MDs, 1 Science Professor, 1 Volunteer Coordinator, 1 PI

Have you talked to any admissions recruiters at the Texas schools or participated in TMDSAS Office Hours? We don't know much about your purpose as a physician or any specific geography within Texas that would make you desirable. What feedback have you received from your prehealth advisors?

Yes, a slightly higher MCAT I think can help but holistic review matters. I don't foresee that you would get screened out from the information you provide, but I don't get a sense of your impact on your campus aside from tutoring, so I'm not sure how well you would interact with classmates. In short, I need more to compel me to want to interview you.

Thank you so much for the response! I have not talked to any admission recruiters unfortunately. I'm not from a rural area, nor do I live in east Texas, so my location may not be as appealing. When the health committee reviewed my application, they said everything was good except to just fix my personal statement. I am a member of a pre-medical organization and another organization that's serves underserved communities. Do you have any advice on how to come off as more compelling?
