I have been talking to a few AMG residents and some of them feel a little bitter about the influx of IMGs/FMGs coming in and taking up positions at good programs. They however don't care about the IMGs taking up spots at smaller community programs, which of course is creating a ripple effect on the programs all over. It actually is creating a lot of subconcious defensive reactions among some AMGs.

I am not trying to make it an AMG vs IMG issue but am soliciting honest opinions from AMGs about how they feel with so many IMGs coming in. Do they feel threatened and fear that it makes it difficult for them to match at their favorite programs.

Any thoughts which lead to a fruitful discussion are welcome 🙂

Personally I'm not worried about IMG/FMG's since unfortunately I've heard things like "I want to get more competitive residents in my program" or "I need other types of residents to start coming here to make this strong" or from other residents things like "If you're an AMG, you're going to get in" - which actually kinda makes me feel like I'm a loser or something?! Its like, oh so as long as you're not an IMG you're in? 😱 Especially since I thought some of these programs were nice programs - nothing where I would call them "weak" but then again, I'm not a resident yet so I don't know what "weak" is.

The other programs I've interviewed at have no FMG's at all - which is a bit sad since it seems even on the webpage they're not welcomed by requiring an extraordinary amount of additional application material - which must totally suck for them. THen again, I think that if I was a PD and didn't know the school in the country someone was graduating from, I'd probably want all that stuff too.

In the end, my top two choices have FMG's and my home school has FMG's so I really like working with them. The places without them felt a bit snobby and I'm not that kinda gal --- so thats my two cents 😳

BTW, some of the Indian docs I've worked with are more brilliant than any other docs I've met anywhere - in medicine my preceptor is dual boarded in medicine and surgery and he did 4 residencies - 2 in India and 2 here, he is the SCARIEST brainiac I've ever met and my hero 😀
