For anyone that has read my recient posts about this, I have a friend who has been on paxil for 8yrs and is trying to get pregnant. She is trying very hard to get off of the paxil due to the negative effects on the baby. Meanwhile throughout the last 8 months that she's been trying to get pregnant she has been using tazorac, which is a topical rx ointment used for psoriosis and acne. She uses it for her acne. Both her ob/gyn and fp know she is trying to get pregnant (which she was 8 months ago but had a miscarrige) and she has been using tazorac for a year which her fp perscribed to her. Anyways, she just happened to be reading in a pill book that she had and came across acne meds. She looked up hers and found out that it is in a category X and is absolutlely not to be used by a pregnant woman or anyone that is trying to become pregnant. In fact, it says that anyone who perscribes tazorac should perform a pregnancy test on the woman within 2 weeks before taking it and women taking it should use reliable birth control measures while taking it, and if accidentally becoming pregnant, immediatly stop taking it and consult physician. It claims to cause serious birth defects. Anyone reading this should look up Tazorac. The last 8 months my friend has been trying very hard to become pregnant while at the same time trying very hard to ween off of paxil for the safety of her unborn child, all while using tazorac 2x a day for her acne. I wouldn't think to tell a physician about the topical acne med I was using and I bet there are a lot of women that think the same. I currently wash my face with phisohex which is rx and I wouldn't have mentioned it to my doc before. She would have continued to use the tazorac if it wern't for her coming across this pill book. She even said that when she became pregnant 8 months ago that she actually used it 3x a day b/c her acne got worse when pregnant. Please spread the word b/c we can't guarentee that the docs are always going to be on top of things and we can't guarentee that women will concider a topical ointment a medicine to inform a doc about. I would venture to guess that there are a lot of women in the US using tazorac and probably only half of them know about this info. Also, there are probably people out there that have children w/birth defects and have no idea why.
