Just wanted to let people know what I learned today about the Wash U merit scholarships. Apparently, decisions on the scholarships (DSS & DAS) will be made next Wednesday and if you're selected for interview you'll be notified by phone on 4/17 or 4/18. Everyone else gets a letter, but they said they would be able to tell me over the phone after 4/17 if I needed to know for making other plans or whatever (since their interview weekend coincides with at least a couple revisits).
Good luck all!

Thanks for the update. Do you know how many people they interview for scholarships?

I didn't ask ... but I seem to remember someone somewhere once before (??) citing statistics like 100 apply and 35 interview for 7 scholarships ...

I thought the app said there were 12 scholarships.

That sounds more reasonable based on what the website says - 5 of one, 4 of the other, 5 or so URM, one Barnes-Jewish one, and various others (number unspecified). The odds still aren't that great  but what the heck, it would be great to be interviewed!

The discrepency in the number of scholarship comes from the Distinguished Alumni Scholarships, I think, that vary from year to year depending on who contributes.

when I interveiwed in January, Dr. Walters said there were 16 of them. Oh well, I got a letter last week telling me that I have been selected as an alternate (I guess that's the scholarship version of a waitlist).

I thought you had to be invited to interview first. Does that mean you're an alternate to be interviewed?

wait, I'm confused. I thought the committee wasn't even meeting until this wednesday to make decisions on DSS, DAS etc. Was this for the Olin scholarship?

ok, now i am confused as to how many scholarships there are next year? Does anybody know for sure whats going on this year??? just wondering.... so maybe 12-16 awards huh?

bump--anybody know anything interesting?

All the letter said was that if somebody declines the scholarship, I am eligible to receive it. It doesn't go into detail. Oh well, I'm going there on Thursday for the revisit weekend so I figured I'll ask them.

Hmm,

WashU has some distinguished minority scholarships, for which neither a separate application nor an interview are required. Perhaps warpath got "waitlisted" for one of those? Anyway, best of luck with that, warpath! My guess is some people on this board will hear about DSS/DAS interviews over the next couple of days. Let us know when you do!

Did anyone get a call from Dean Walters today? If so, and you don't mind me asking, what was it about?

We should be hearing today, I think. Good luck.

I just called them, and they said that they will be making calls to people who are invited to interview through Monday.

Good luck!

Is anyone brave enough to call and ask for an answer? If I don't get interviewed, I want to go to a different "second look" that same weekend, for which I would have to buy a ticket TODAY to get 14-day advance! Argh, this is driving me crazy! I wish they would just hurry up and tell us.

I think I'll wait a few more hours and then call.

Are you guys referring to/waiting for scholarships you've applied for specifically, or is this just stuff that everybody accepted is considered for? I applied for the Olin fellowship and didn't get it and am pretty much planning on going to a different school, but I guess I didn't realize there might still be a possibility of merit aid from Wash U .. .?

You're right, there are a bunch of different scholarships, some of which you have to apply specifically for, and other for which you don't. The ones discussed here (that we are all waiting on) are the Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Student Scholarships - I think a certain percentage of the accepted pool is invited to apply and the application went out around the same time as the acceptance letter.

I know at least one person who got an email yesterday from Dean Walters, so notifications have indeed begun to go out. Supposedly he called around 5-10 people yesterday. This is all for the DSS scholarship thing.

Folks--

Just called Diane at (314) 362-6851.

She'll tell you over the phone whether you made finalist or not.

She's really nice--I didn't make the cut, and she was trying to break the news nicely, but ended up stumbling over all these euphemisms. It was kind of funny and sweet!

Well, this just made my med school decision for me!

Good luck, everyone!

I called a little while ago, and I got the same euphemisms..."Unfortunately, we won't be able to give you a scholarship, but we can't wait to meet you in August!" She was very nice :) . Good luck to Incendiary and anyone else who is going to the interview!

So I called the Finncial Aid office today. First, the receptionist tells me she doesn't have any info about DSS/DAS. With some gentle prodding, she tells me she found "the list" and asks for my name. I tell her and she informs me that I'm not on the list...but that is a good thing because that was the list of semi-finalists?!?! She tells me that the Dean will be calling people today and Monday and people who don't make it will hear in the mail. I then decided to call the number listed on this thread for "Diane." She said the list of interviewees will not be ready until Monday (eventhough some people on this thread were informed that they would not be offered an interview). Did I recieve good or bad news? What is going on at WashU?!?! Does anyone else want to try calling?

Hey vkrn, where are you going next year??

I was notified that I was a finalist. At this stage, you have about a 50/50 chance of getting a full-ride

bobcat, incendiary, and anyone else selected as a finalist ... congrats and good luck!!

Thanks a lot sorrento!

bobcat, how do you know our odds are 50/50? Do you know how many finalists were selected to interview?

Didn't get it, oh well, hopefully I get into UCLA, otherwise I'll have to resort to a ****load of loans.

Bobcat and Incendiary - congrats! I sent both of you a PM - please check. Thanks.

I got the DMSS. It came in the mail last wednessday. I'm so happy.

Wow, that's fantastic!!! Congratulations :)

When someone hears, do post. I'll probably hear Wednesday night, so I'll post then...

Good luck all! :)

Dean Walters called me this morning to tell me that I received the full-tuition scholarship. As
I understand it, 20 people are interviewing for 10-11 spots (the 11th depends on whether
Wash U can pull enough funds to fund one more scholarship), and there will be 2 other scholars from last year who deferred their scholarship. Of the 20 people who interviewed,
however, there seems to be a good chance that some will decline the scholarship (possibly
including myself).

I got the full ride as well. 24 hours to decide the next four years of my life!

Hey guys,

I got it too. This is going to be a long 24 hours. Bobcat, Loafy, I PMed you.

Nothing for me. :( Maybe I'll get the bad news tomorrow then.

Hey everyone. I got the nod yesterday as well. I'm still trying to figure out whether I'm going to accept, since there are some compelling reasons for me to stay out here in CA. Did any of you decide yet?

I turned it down. I'm heading to Yale. Good luck everyone, WashU is a great school.

Well, I decided to accept the scholarship. I guess that does it for this application process. woo hoo!

Hmm... I still haven't been called. This certainly can't be good news. Was I not even worth the long distance charges, even if for bad news?

Well, I think I may have been a trash collector, but I got it. I'm 99% set on WashU, so I hope to see you guys in a year. :)

Just want to give my congrats to all you who got the scholarship! A full ride to one of the best schools in the country is nothing to spit at!

damn I still haven't heard from Wash U post-interview....any spaces still open?

Did anyone else end up accepting or turning it down?
