Okay.. so my stats, not awful but nothing that a top 10 school would even look at. 3.5 gpa; 33 mcat. I have a grand total of *no* research experience. I applied to a few reach schools like U of Penn and U of Mich. A couple of months after I submitted the AMCAS application I got a letter from Wash U that basically was inviting me to apply to their program (I think the letter had something to do with women in medicine). So I was like... okay.. if one of the best med schools in the nation asks me to apply the least I could do is scribble out an application for them.

I didn't hear anything from them until yesterday where they invited me for an interview. I'm stunned. Does anyone know why such a research oreinted excellent school would even cough my way? Is Wash U running into some problem where they need more female applicants? Any other female applicants surprised at Wash U's interest? Or are they just inviting me for sh*ts and giggles so when I get there they can say "gottcha!"

I am not surprised that WashU invited you for an interview. 3.5/33 is something WashU would interview. No "research" experience? I don't think that's too much of a problem since WashU wants a diverse class and just about every other applicant their has done some research. -- you just stand out in that regard. I'm sure whatever else you did makes up for it.

WashU invites ~25% of its applicants for an interviews (which is one of the highest percentages I've seen).

Now that you have an interview, try to make the most of it and get an 'accept'! Good luck. :luck:

Huh... I was just looking up Wash U admission stats. They only get 3,000 applicants? How very odd... anyone have an idea why no one seems to apply to such a good school?

Yup. St. Louis.

I got the same letter, and had the exact same thought process... 😉 I wasn't going to apply, but hey, what the hell, right? I've heard nothing from them since though (3.9, 33). I emailed a week ago (I've only got them and JHU left to hear from) and got the "your file is being reviewed, no decision has been made yet about an interview" response. I don't even know if I would go to an interview there at this point, but it is crazy that they seem to be soliciting female applicants. I definitely didn't think a 33 was good enough to catch their attention either... ahhh well... it's only money, right? 😀

i didn't apply because of location and because i really didn't like what I'd heard about them being a numbers *****. My numbers aren't through the roof so I was a little intimidated but also just didn't want to go to a place that emphasized that to such a large degree. its a definite turnoff despite its other strengths, like research.

women in medicine ehhh... Now do you all believe that women are the biggest recipent of afirmative action...

i too, was not planning on applying (3.88,34) and was stunned when i got the women in medicine letter but decided what the hell, i might as well try. interviewed in november, but im still waiting to hear anything. starting to feel that it was all a big, cruel joke.

I think they are just trying to get more applicants in general... I got a letter asking me to apply there (3.78/35, but from a crappy undergrad).

I applied but they lost my check; I had to resend it, so my file wasnt complete until mid december :/

I was very surprised when I got a letter from them telling me I should apply there, actually. If it wasnt for location, it would be in my top 2 (too far from family, etc).

I just got an interview with a 32. I think they're yanking my chain. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the $350 for the plane ticket. (That's the cheapest I could find.)

Wow! Congrats! I have a 32 too and I wouldn't mind getting an interview since I can actually drive there. Maybe I should go check my mail 🙂

didnt feel like starting a new thread for this, so thought id put this info here. just got an email reply saying that my rejection letter was mailed yesterday. looks like the post-secondary rejections have started...

Thanks. 🙂 I dunno though. I feel like they wouldn't possibly ever accept me, that maybe they're just interviewing me in case there's a nuclear holocaust and everyone with a mid-30s and above MCAT dies and they still have another slot to fill.

I've been getting waitlisted left and right at schools with average mcats more similar to my own, so it's hard for me to believe they could really want me.

WashU is an amazing school. I went to my interview in October and didnt really think i would like it. turns out that i loved it (unfortunately, i haven't heard back from them). i think you cant really know how you will like a place until you visit. everyone has their opinions that they will offer, but you have to experience it for yourself.

same here; i have the same numbers as you carlene and also felt intimidated to apply. I didnt realize they got so few apps and interviewed so many.

my 2005-2006 MSAR says last year they had 3733 applicants and had 1085 interviews. that's a pretty favorable ratio--not that it did me any damn good. :meanie: :meanie:
