That should definitely get you into WSU. What's going on?

I interviewed there (I'm from California) in October. I'm on the waitlist now. I haven't even called to see if I'm indeed on the waitlist, I just haven't received an acceptance yet.

I would presume at some point I would get an acceptance if I waited long enough, just like I think you will get one.

MCAT: 34R

Sci. GPA: 3.92

I wish all of you guys luck in your getting into medical school and hope that it all works out. However, please check out the prior threads about Wayne State, both in this forum and in the Allopathic forum. Currently there are serious problems about the stability of this school and their agreement with the Detoit Medical Center (the hospital at which you go for rotations). A new dean is set to take over on March 1st, 2006 and the existing contract between Physician's group and DMC is set to expire on March 31, 2006. Whether or not suitable agreements can be made is yet to be seen. Again, good luck in your pursuit of your goals, but be careful with this medical school.

I guess it is not always about the mcat score and GPA. Sure EC's have to do with it but it also has to do with the fact that with such a high GPA and MCAT score you are most likely to get accepted by a better school and therefore they would rather not even bother giving you a spot.

I am did my undergrad at WSU, hopefully they will be a little bias towards me.

Alternate list
I'm old.

Edit:
LOI sent sometime in December.
Next up is letter from WSU alum.
mtDNA will get in way before me.

GPA: 4.0
finished undergrad in December (one semester early)
MCAT: 33Q
Have done research at Wayne, and have LORs from a prof there and from an alumni of the med school
Interviewed: Sept. 12
Sent in a letter of intent (indicating Wayne is my 1st choice) in December
Status: Waitlist

Seriously, this is crazy. I wish I could say that they think I am overqualified, but since I sent them a letter of intent, I tend to think something else is going on here.
As far as that stuff with the DMC goes, I would be awfully surprised if that contract was not renewed. Both parties are holding out for a better deal is all, but in the end they both need each other. DMC barely has enough help as it is, and Wayne's entire draw is based on thier affiliation with DMC. It is something to keep an eye on though.

I heard from a current 4th year at Wayne that most of his friends there (and he himself) came in off the waitlist. In fact, he couldn't think of someone off the top of his head who came in off a direct acceptance.

I don't know how they decide who to admit, but it must be a crazy process.

I interviewed early on with a few other SDN folks. Our student tour guide told all of us that if we were interviewing that early (among the first group of interviewees in September) that the school loved us and we'd all surely be accepted right away. I was lucky and received an acceptance, but don't know of anyone else from that group who has. (There were a few lurkers who haven't said anything - maybe they got in...)

They are definitely hard to figure out.

:luck: Good luck to everyone! :luck:

Interviewed in Oct, accepted Nov (the next decision date). My numbers are close to all of yours.

For those with high stats but were still waitlisted or deferred, what do you think prevented you from an immediate acceptance?

Damn anyone with scores as low as mine. Give me some hope at least

The only advantage I have is that I am a WSU undergrad (already graduated) and I did 3 yrs research for the school. I know I have approx a 50% chance of getting in at this point so i guess it is kind of a toss up for me.

Maybe it was the essays? They did seem to stress the diversity experience issue..

Now that you mentione it, I do feel that my diversity essay for Wayne St. was one of the better secondary responses that I wrote. They did seem to stress the diversity/urban environment issue, and I felt that I did a great job of not only explaining why that wasn't something that would be uncomfortable for me, but something that I looked forward to.

My interviewer didn't even mention my essay, though. He just asked me how do I think I'll be able to handle living and working in Detroit, and I said that I'll be just fine.

Dude,
R u serious that you sent out ur letter of intent and still waitlisted? I was going to send out mines since I was waitlisted since December with my interview in November. I wonder whats up with them.

Unfortunately, I am dead serious. In the letter I made it very clear that wayne was my first choice, and that I would immediately withdraw my application from all other schools upon being accepted there. I called the office to make sure they had received it, and they had. When I called in on the offer day: "you are still in the alternate category at this time". I don't even know what to make of it. I wish you the best, hopefully your luck is better than mine.

For you guys waiting or interviewing. I will be giving up my spot in the next week or so after one of my state school confirms they have recieved my matriculation paperwork. Even if I recieved a huge scholarship from Wayne their $73,000 a year out of state budget is quite a bit higher than even the private schools I applied to. Best of luck to all of you and for those of you waiting or who have yet to interview. WSU was NOT a stress interview or anything to worry about. :luck: 👍

$73,000 is the budget, not the tuition. That includes living expenses and the like.

This school has a crazy way of waitlisting and accepting ppl! It doesn't seem to make sense

GPA: 3.8
MCAT: 31
out of state (Ohio)
Interviewed in early November
Status: Accepted

But I didn't accept the acceptance, as I've decided to go in-state. So I opened up a spot for you wait-listers, rather than hold on to it until May (or pay the exorbinant hold fee). 🙂

Sorry for not being specific.

WSU

TX Tuition
In state ~8-9 depending on the school ($6500 for Baylor)
With everything in the high budget $20-23K

GPA: 3.84
MCAT: 35Q
In-state, hopkins undergrad
i=9/12, alternate listed, withdrew after pitt med

thank you 🙂 keep it real at umich!

Hey, does anybody have any advice on the Wayne State interview??? What kind of things do they ask? Is it a tough committee or do they make it relatively painless? I've already read some of the horror stories on this forum and don't want to get too freaked until the time comes. Thanks...

You have to convey that you're willing to work in Detroit, that you don't mind the homeless, drug addicts, gang-bangers, and prostitutes. Overall, just show a lot of love.

The committee isn't that tough. Some people didn't take the interview too seriously, like this one girl who interviewed with me. She showed up in her normal school cloths!!! That's really disrespectful, since this is a time to act like a professional.

-Cum GPA 3.61
-Science GPA 3.51
-MCAT scores 23R, 29M
-Michigan Resident
-WAYNE COUNTY RESIDENT (almost as important as being a MI resident because they want future doctors to stay in the area not go run off to Cali, so all of you who want to write a letter of intent make sure you include that you want to practice in SELM...and mean it)
-From one of the three "feeder" schools
-Outstanding LORS, research, etc
-Interviewed January 2005
-Accepted Feburary 2005
-Began class August 1st 2005

Once you get an interview you have been deemed to be academicaly fit for admission now they want to get in your head to see if you have the right personality. Most/if not all of the interviews are laid back in nature, they might glance over your AMCAS a few times and ask about specific activites to get conversation going. The worst thing you can do IMO is just answer questions like:

"tell me about this experience"
"It was great"

Talk a bit, carry on a convo, but don't be a chatterbox.

The Wayne State interview was really laid back and easy, but when I went everything was very disorganized. My interview was supposed to be at 9 am, but I sat around for an hour I think! Then the interviewer came out and got me, but didn't really have much to say, and kinda seemed half asleep. But they are really big on experience with diversity, and since I had worked with homeless people before, that helped a lot.

Oh, and then after my interview I had 2 hours until lunchtime and nothing to do. They said I could sit in on some classes, but there weren't any that day...also I didn't see the other interviewees until lunchtime, I didn't even know there were others!

I was a little unimpressed with this, but this might have just been my day.

I would highlight your experience with diverse populations as much as possible...since I had worked with migrant workers as well, I had a lot of experience, which was probably a big factor on my acceptance.

Good luck 🙂

When is the offer day this month? (I know I can just call the admissions office to find out, but I also want to bump this thread since I am interested in hearing any info that anyone has on Wayne).

There is no problem with the "stability" of Wayne State. Even if the negotiations with DMC fall through, there are other options. Henry Ford Health Systems would jump on the opportunity to steal away DMC's relationship with WSU SOM. HFHS already has a small relationship. Moving to another hospital system wouldnt affect the quality of the education...

With that being said, something will be worked out with the DMC. They need WSU SOM more then WSU SOM needs them. DMC is trying to get WSU to renew their contract while giving WSU less money. DMC has financial problems as the majority of patients are uninsured, since the suburban residents stick with Beamont, Providence, etc, and the insured Detroit residents generally go to the suburbs. It is important to note that the city and the state will not let DMC 'fail', as they are both very reliant on the services provided.

Thus, something will be worked out. Even if nothing is, there are other options; but something will be. DMC needs WSU. There is no stability problem.

Most people here didnt. WSU was on the bottom of my list. I was accepted to my 2nd choice (Case Western), but ulitmately chose to stay here.

As with everyone else I have talked to in my class who didnt plan on coming here, I am glad I did.

Hey-- so, if you were just placed on the alternate list does that mean that you probably won't get off for a while?

Has anyone been placed on the alternate list and gotten off of it the next cycel?

While the majority of people that are accepted off the waitlist come after the interviewing rounds, yes they do accept people each cycle off the waitlist.

And yes it is true a large percent of each class comes off the waitlist. My gross partner was accepted a week before class started... and he has honored every class thus far.

Has anybody who has been accepted and is saving a spot been contacted recently?

I only got the mail that said that they recieved my deposit and nothing else, I figure that they would be sending out at least financial aid stuff around now.

We'll make it easy on you. Fill out your FAFSA, wait until they send you the verification worksheet and go with Medfunds for your loans. 👍

I think there is a huge stability issue here. I don't think most people realize the status of the negotiations on a master contract between WSU and DMC. Only last week did negotations start up again. As of now there is no contract. Now, chances are that there WILL BE one by March 31st when the old one expires, but the path to get there is anything but stable. For Some people, March 1st can't get here soon enough (i.e. when the new dean takes over). Right now negotiations are happening between the Wayne State Board of Governors and the DMC. However, what you don't realize is that Lansing is responsible for this situation for putting the current CEO in charge. While nobody wants to see the DMC go by the wayside, the current CEO does not understand what he is doing. Multiple people in the upper eschelons of WSU can attest to this and point to his ego as the reason for this mess. With the current DMC leadership, they will try at every point of the negotiations to save money and impact the education at WSU. It is anything but stable.

The reason why I posted here on the pre-allopathic board is because you guys are at the start of all this. You have worked so hard to get here and now you shouldn't have to sign up for something like this when you don't have to. Be wary. Make sure that WSU will continue to have a complete medical school so that you are not shortchanged when you are applying for residencies in 4 years!
