Hey all, I got the following info in an email today. I thought I would pass it on to those who might not be getting the emails yet:

"PDA:
Hi, I just received the following from the Office of Academic and
Student Programs regarding the PDAs. If you have any questions, please
let me know.
1st year medical students will be required to have a PDA upon
matriculation in medical school, since these devices will be integrated
into many aspects of the educational curriculum starting even in the
first year. To standardize the hardware students use, the School of
Medicine is recommending that students purchase the Toshiba model e800,
which has many advanced features that will allow the unit to remain
current for several years. If you already have another PDA or you decide
to purchase another device than the one recommended above, the minimum
requirements for a PDA to function in our system can be found at
http://shop.campusmobility.com/information.php?info_id=1. In addition,
CampusMobility is running a special promotion on the Toshiba e800 through
the end of May. It will be listed at www.shop.campusmobility.com as
Toshiba E800 MED/EDU special for $495. To order it, please indicate your
ACCESS [email protected] in the comment section.

Let me know if you have any problems ordering this special. A PDA
allowance ($665) is included in your total financial aid budget. Funds
are not available prior to the start of classes.

Financial Aid:
Financial Aid packages are being processed. To find out what your
package consists of, you will need to go to Pipeline. Then go to Student
and Financial Aid. If you have any problems, feel free to let me know
and I will try to help you through them.

Physicals:
Physicals will be required to register. You may have your physician use
a generic form or request one from the registrar's office at
313-577-1470. You must have a current TB test (May 2004 or later) and if
you have already completed the Hepatitis B series, you must bring proof.

Orientation:
Orientation begins August 2 and will last the week. It is required. You
will register during that week. Classes begin August 9.
Housing:

Housing information is available from the Office of Student Organizations
(Tracy Eady) at 313-577-1463.

Additional offers
Remember that you can continue to receive offers from other medical
schools but you must notify us within 2 weeks whether or not you wish to
continue to hold your place at WSU, (that time period will be reduced as
we get closer to orientation). We hope you will choose WSUSOM but
understand that each student needs to make the choice that is right for
them. "

Congrats...I'm trying to get off the waitlist and was just wondering: what does one write in a LOI?

Pretty much that it is the only place you want to be and you will drop all your other acceptances or waitlist spots if you are accepted. Sucking up is also key. Finally, you can't go wrong offering your first born child.

Hi everyone

I am just wondering if any of you who have decided to go to Wayne for sure have purchased the PDA yet. I just got the email about that yesterday, so I am looking into it right now. Are you all getting the Toshiba e800 that they recommend? Just curious.

Thanks!

I didn't get it, I still don't get why it's so crucial to have one

do any of you guys know anyone who got accepted to the MD/ PhD program?

This will only be the second year of requiring a PDA, so the program is still being adjusted as far as the uses.
This past year, our class had to use them for in-class interactive stuff (for some classes), and we had to use them for filling out all our class evaluations(which are time consuming and frequent for year 2 classes, but they're no worse than the paper ones, I guess, and the school is trying to cut down on the paper load) Then there's all the online stuff you can do while in the school, as well as downloading notes and video of lectures. We're also expecting to use them quite a bit during third year rotations. I imagine that they will expand the use for incoming first-years. Honestly, it's been kind of a pain in the butt because our class was the guinea pig, so they were working out the kinks and the applications on us. Hopefully it will be better organized by the time you all start. You might find that solitaire and jawbreaker come in handy
during some of the more boring lectures. 😉

hello all,

i got my first acceptance in 3 years on thursday from wayne, by a phone call from dawn street, i had been waitlisted. a day which was capped off by an amazing stones victory, and onto the pacers we go. im holding waitlist spots at albany which i will let go and tufts which i havent decided what to do with yet. good luck to all. just have patience, i mean it took me all this time, patience is key and perisistence as well, write as many letters as you can.

as far as pda's and all that, ill wait till classes start and see what they really want from us, im not a big fan of gettin stuck with stuff i dont need

I'll get the e800 just for compatibility issues. It's like in high school where 98% of the students had TI-82/83 calculators. For the few that had the TI-85's they could never figure out how to work them, and nobody else knew. This way, if I have a question about the e800, in terms of applications or settings, people should be able to help. This is especially true in regards to the wireless settings, where all devices will have different protocals.

As for being required to use them, I commend Wayne for taking the initiative to try and integrate the technology into the curriculum. Especially since Wayne is so low budget and old-school in so many ways. The newest hospitals heavily rely on PDAs, like the GW university hospital, so it makes sense that we should become familiar with them. Plus, many find them helpful during MS III-IV because you can download programs like medical dictionaries and references, instead of walking around with 10 books in your pockets. Should be interesting...

I can't wait to get started!!!!!!! I'm a lil nervous but I'm still very excited!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Brad! Good to hear the wait list is moving

Did you address your LOI directly to the dean? and how many did you send? I sent a letter to the admissions commitee, do you think I should send another to the Dean? Also, how long did they give you to decide if you will go there or not?
Thanks , hope to see you in august 🙂

I sent mine directly to the dean. I just sent one. I think if you sent it to the adcom it will still get put in your file but what's it gonna hurt to send another to the dean. Just make sure it's not the same letter. They gave me three weeks to decide. Good luck to you 👍 .

Hey guys!

I am also going to Wayne and really excited about the many opportunities the school has to offer. I've grown up in the metropolitan area and Wayne State is truly a diamond in the ruff! Even though it's so early in the summer, I am actually looking forward to orientation and meeting everyone in our class. I hear that the ambience is very friendly and social!

Feel free to AIM me at ace10is11!

Can't wait to meet you! 🙂

Emily
