This message goes out to potential applicants and potential future students. Be careful about this school's stability. The contract between the UPG (University Physician's Group) and the DMC (Detroit Medical Center - the training hospitals) is up on March 31, 2006. The usual 3 year deal was not reached in 2005 at the end of the previous contract and a 1-year extension was given. However, the current contract situation is not promising. As of now multiple academic departments have only tenuous agreements and some departments do not have any agreement. Also the DMC has chosen to negotiate with the individual departments instead of a unified physician's group. What does this mean for a pre-med though. Basically, there is a chance that ACGME/RRC could step in and terminate all residency programs based on this contract situation or lack of one. The DMC is looking at a bottom line for managing their books and is not very interested in education. If you have another choice in schools I would seriously consider another option. If you have already accepted an offer at WSU, I would ask a dean just how stable the situation is in Detroit. You don't need to have this turmoil in your life if you don't have to. You have worked too hard to get to this place in your life.

Hmmmm..... Wouldn't happen to be on the waitlist, now would we?

No."

You gotta' admit that would be a good way to eliminate the competition. But seriously, you raised some valid points and I appreciate you looking out for us.

I think it's still too early to be projecting the apocalypse. They still have a couple months and new applicants don't need to commit until May, so they'll know what the deal is beforehand.

Regardless, the two sides are too interdependent. Failing to renew the contract would result in both of them cutting their noses off to spite their faces. Without Wayne, the DMC looses its best physicians, would be faced with serious competition from the UPG, and would loose any credibility it has on a national level. Meanwhile, Wayne would loose a place where the majority of their students rotate and the host of their residency programs. It's not like the DMC is the only hospital we rotate at, so it wouldn't be the end for the students. We are lucky to be associated with multiple hospital systems that are larger than the single hospitals most medical schools work with. We'll see what the future holds.

Actually, I heard that he is a professor at WSU SOM...he is trying to get students to stand up and show their displeasure with the fact that they have not been entirely informed/included/considered in the negotiations. It seems that the issue is about money and the DMC is not showing that they care about the educational experiences of the students of Wayne State. I hope this situation gets resolved soon.

Four days ago, the chairman of the ortho program at my school told me that Wayne State just lost their ortho program officially. I don't know if it has anything to do with this whole situation, but that sounds bad to me....
