To account for the heat in august:
ladies= a nice blouse and skirt
gentlemen= sorry jacket and tie :( (take the coat off outside when u have a chance but be sure to have it on in front of anybody important)

You're actually inside for most of it. Except for the tour.

I interviewed at Western last year. It's a pretty neat school. I like how the whole place used to be a strip mall. They converted it into a school! There's a bar on campus!

The people there seemed to enjoy being there. There was a concern a few years back because of their relatively low board-pass rates, but they've significantly improved it in the last few years.

I'm a 3rd year DO student at Western. My advice is to make sure you dress professionally. Sounds obvious, but our school places great emphasis on maturity and professionalism. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me - I'm on vacation!

Woot Woot! Vacation! I'm wearing the generic, shirt, coat, and tie, with matching pants. It's just like a job interview. BTW, what's the dress code when attending classes, doing rotations? Thanks. Enjoy your vacation!

The only dress codes are for OMM class (once a week), which you are required to wear loose-fitting clothing. Men, shorts and a shirt you can take off; women, shorts and a sports bra (wear t-shirt over it and take off the t-shirt when it's time to palpate). Sounds ackward at first, but by the end of the first semester, you'll be stripping down in front of each other like it's no big deal. Occassionally you'll be seeing standardized patients, and you are required to dress professionally (meaning interview-like clothes) and that's about every 2nd or 3rd week depending on your ECM (essentials of clinical medicine) schedule. I'd recommend scrubs or something you don't mind throwing away for gross anatomy lab, but there's no real requirement for lab other than close-toed shoes (my roommate dropped a scalple on his toe while wearing sandals in the lab - i wouldnt recommend that).

Thanks. That's very helpful considering that I heard that some medical schools require their students to wear a shirt and tie to class for men and similarly for women.

You should have received a confirmation of your interview from Cameron. In there, there should be links to hotels/motels near campus. Many of them have a shuttle service to and from Western. They also have special rates for COMP interviewees. You must ask the motel/hotel about setting this up when you are making your reservations.

Anyone flying into LAX? I am tempted to just because it is half the price but a 45 minute drive (vs. 20 mins from Ontario). I found a rental car co that is only $13.50/24 hours, unlimited miles at LAX (plus a little more if you are under 25).

I'd been told by friends, who live around there, that driving to and from LAX is an nightmare. They said that instead of a 15 minute ride to Claremont, it is over an hour, if you missed the exit. But then another friend of mine said that LAX is not that bad.

Same here! You're right, sweet deal. I made my confirmation today. I'll be flying in on the 7th at around 3pm. We should meet up/hang out that day if you're around. Private message me if you want to talk on AIM or YIM.

I just got the invite. Haven't heard about the date thus far. I would fly into Ontario if you can! I have rented a car at LAX before and it was HELLISH!! I waited for 2 hours to get it (the price was 13 bucks a day). I think I am skipping LAX if possible.

If you don't have a ride (or a place to stay), ask the school if a med. student will pick you up.

Anyone, have any advice or info on Western in general?

FYI, when I scheduled my interview i asked about that and they sounded confused and said "uh, we don't do that". So I guess I'm going to fork out the $$$ fly down there and live in luxury. :) I'm excited though, western is my number 1

Hi guys! Congratulations on your interview invites! Don't stress, the interview is pretty laid-back. Depending on who you get, you may be asked some ethical questions. I was asked how I felt about a well known foreign politician being bumped up on the U.S. transplant organ list and how I would justify experimenting on animals for scientific progress to a roommate that was pro-animal rights.

I'm excited about starting at Western. I hear great things about how students did on the recent USMLE and recent changes to the curriculum (which last year's students did extensive evaluations on for future classes). If you are interviewing late August and beyond, I may be able to provide a place to stay for a night! Just PM me.

Places that I would recommend going to while you're in the area:

Downtown Fullerton (20-25 min. drive) - lots of bars, clubs, restaurants (all around good time, mostly college students)

Downtown Pasadena (25-30 min. drive) - Irish bars, a couple clubs, lots of shopping, lots of places to eat (Cheesecake Factory, etc.) - fun atmosphere

Ontario Mills (15 min. drive) - tons of outlet shopping!

Chino Spectrum (15 min. drive) - few places to eat and hang out

Victoria Gardens (15 min. drive) - outdoor shopping area with places to eat and hang out (ie Yard House, Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, etc)

You can basically google any of these placese and get a list of the restaurants/shopping that is available at each of them.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! I welcome PMs :)

Truckibear....thanks for all the support! Keep us posted on your progress!

I felt alot better when I found their match results. You can search for it on Western's Website (use the little search box, type match).
I kind of like to see where people are going once they graduate and that they are not deligated to the far corners of the earth!

Anywho, I decided to fly into Ontario. I found a car for $17 bucks a day! Woohooo. I am pretty excited to come back "home" to Cali!

Best of luck to everyone!! Yeah! :luck:

Here is my #'s

overall GPA: 3.63
science GPA: 3.58
non-science: 3.68
MCAT: 26M --> weak!! I know

Extracurricular:
-200+ hrs ER volunteer
-1.5 yrs ( 1200+ hrs) working as a PCT (Patient Care Tech) --> I'm basicially a glorified CNA, the only difference is I also do Phlebotomy, so they give me a much cooler title.
- At the tender age of 19 I traveled to Bolivia for 2 yrs as a missionary (2001-2003) It was awesome by the way!!! included religious proselyting and lots of community service.
- 2005 American Heart Association Summer Undergraduate Internship Awardee
(Cardio Research w/ pacemakers, and pacemaker protocols, it was in collaboration w/ Guidant corp. (i.e. the bigtime!) about 600hrs total --> I also co-authored a paper. (PUBLISHED)
- the list goes on as well but I'm too lazy to list.

My GPA is brought down completely by my first semester as a freshman. You know the drill. What an Idiot. Anyway, so I basically came home from Bolivia and hit it hard. Retook all the classes and got busy! Hopefully they're good enough.

The good thing is once we get to <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.qklinkserver.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=92&k=med%20school&st=1" onmouseover="window.status='Search for: med school'; self.ql_skeyphrase='med%20school'; if(window.event) self.ql_sevent=window.event.srcElement; self.ql_timeout = setTimeout('ql_doMouseOver(1)', 1000); self.ql_isOverLink=true; return true;" onclick="if(self.ql_timeout) clearTimeout(self.ql_timeout); self.ql_isOverTip = false; ql_closeiframe(); self.ql_skeyphrase='med%20school'; window.status='Search for: med school';return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; if(self.ql_timeout) clearTimeout(self.ql_timeout); self.ql_isOverTip = false; setTimeout('ql_closeiframe()', 1500); ">med school</a> we get to start over. Most of us received our interview invites along with the secondary application. Therefore, our file wasn't complete yet. The secondary application must be complete and received by Western U within 30 days of the email or there will be a delay in your processing which may be a "strike" against you.

If you're interested, my mdapps profile has my stats.

Don't worry too much about your MCAT. I think the avg is 9(27) at Western so 26s are competitive, especially you guys are applying and getting interviews early. Just make sure you appear friendly and confident in your interviews. I've heard that the interviewers hate that if you make petty excuses when they ask you about your MCAT, like do not say "I'm not a good test taker"...etc. Always try to talk yourself up, not down when you're explaining yourself.

Wow after reading other people's stat, mine seems inadequate, but here's mine.
Science GPA: 3.3
Non-science GPA: 3.4
MCAT: 27Q
Volunteer: 117
Clinical Experience: 0 (unless you count my summer working as a camp counselor at a camp for the disabled, and my semester abroad in China learning Traditional Chinese Medicine)
Shadowing: 50hrs

But even with this I got invited for an interview, so who knows?

About 20 mins driving (against the traffic). Plan to come early because you don't know what will happen on the highway. :)

Read the "Interview Feedback" on this website. It should be on the home page. Basically, they just want to know more about you. Don't BS or lie.

Hey, I've been reading SDN for a long time but this is my first post.
I got an interview in WU scheduled for September 8th.

I'm from NY and have never been to California. I'm very excited!
I'm wondering if anyone who has an interview on that date will want to meet up and do something the night before or the night after (depends on the flight time). I want to make the best of the trip and enjoy the time that I'm there. PM me if you are interested :)

I would also love a place to stay overnight and to hang out with someone local, maybe with current students there. PM me if this sounds like something you'd be up to.

Thanks :)
