outgolfing- melancholy is sort of a carryover screen name from somewhere else... it still applies here and there, but mostly to matters outside of school for the moment.

I actually started a set of lessons at the Claremont Golf Course. After all the reading I've done and self-practice, I went into two lessons and I've seen an amazing change although I can't quite put my finger on it yet. I still am trying to get my swing up to speed, but if my swing doesn't deteriorate after going to the longer clubs then I will be in great shape. It seems pretty effortless to hit the ball now which is great.

I know of a couple courses/ranges that are relatively close, but I seem to go to the one at Claremont one which is only about 10-15 minutes away from school. As it is, I think there are plenty of resources around here no matter where you live around school.

You are right about it being peaceful on the course. I've only gone twice, but it's relatively relaxing.. especially with the great weather and a few nice hits here and there.

lanny,
that's coo....i can't imagine you being sad....i mean...you're in med school, man....that's awesome....claremont golf course, i've never played there....but, have played at goose creek and empire lakes....which are two hard courses....it's coo that u got lessons...which i had never had the priveledge to take.....why are you going to longer clubs? that doesn't make any sense....well...talk to ya later...kit ;)

Outgolfing- Ahh.. longer clubs as in attempting to hit with say.. my 3 iron or my woods. I find that I am getting pretty good at getting consistent swings with my PW, 9, and 7.. but I notice the success rate seriously dives after the 7 and after that it's a crapshoot. It shouldn't be like that, but it is... probably some minor adjustments I need... slightly flatter swing plane maybe. Well, my next lesson is this Wednesday (tomorrow) so I'll see how that goes. I should be practicing right now.. maybe I'll go to the range and work out right afterwards.. get two things done at the same time!

Hi!
I'm going to attend COMP this year!!!
I'm wondering about how and when to look for housing....since I"m currently attend school in Philadelphia and won't be back to CA (where my home is) till around 6/10.
So, when should I start to look for housing, and any recommendation on where to live best if I don't have a car. (Even though I might get one.)
Also, my home's in Tustin (Orange county), do you guys think it's possible to live at home and drive to school????

Thanks and Hi, everyone!
Anniejojo

Aniejojo: I live in Brea and commute. It takes about a half hour with no traffic. You could live in Tustin, but it would probably take you an hour each way. There are some students who live in LA and Laguna Nigel who commute, but I would say look a little closer.
Being from California, it is pretty hard living here without a car. There are apts across the street from campus, BUT DON'T RENT THERE. Most of the MS1's who did regret it.
Congratulations on your acceptance!

Hey Teloola.. I'm still alive over in the Plaza.. and it is kinda nice to walk over after sleeping through morning classes for lunch when it's nice and sunny out. :) That being said, I think I will pamper myself and move somewhere else after this summer just to give myself some more food options when I drive to/back from school. (That corner with Copy Club, Quizno's, Rubio's, Starbucks, Dairy Queen, etc. in Chino Hills looks like a place I could live in)

melancholy,
oh...i see....longer clubs...i get it ...well, hope your lessons are helping you out.....my advice would be to get a swing you feel comfortable with....the clubs from 6 iron and up...are more of a sweeping of the ball than hitting down on it...well, you still hit down a bit...but, not as much.
aacomas apps i sent in nov....pissed me off...cuz i forgot to ask the registar to send transcrips i was so stupid....oh well,...just venting a little bit...anyways...laters.
;)

outgolfing- damn.. I broke my first club on Friday.. and it wasn't even my club. I suspect the shaft was pretty old as it was.. but I don't know what happened at the range. I must've swung my friend's driver at a funny angle and it somehow snapped at the hosel. Anyway, that's $70 going to a new shaft (He has one of those Harrison Pro Lite 2.5 shafts for distance) including reshafting.. damn.

Lessons took a step back.. it's still taking awhile to get a consistent swing going and that's been kinda frustrating. I feel like I'm travelling backwards now.. so much for that learning curve.. I think I fell down the hump. At any rate, hope I don't have a hangover because I have a lesson Sunday morning at 10am!

teloola- no probs. i like nicer scenery too.. I think I would be happy in Chino Hills or Claremont.. Claremont has that small college town feel. It's especially nice jogging/walking around the Claremont Colleges after class because I tend to see fellow Western U students around as well as Claremont students.

mel,
uggghhh....that's bad...sorry man....i'm sorry to say..your friend's shaft sucks....hehe....just keep plugging away....practice can only make you a better player....
just got a lesson from my coach...and i can feel that i'm swinging...better already....golf is frustrating..but, sometimes...that one sweet swing and contact makes you coming back for some more punishment....heheh....anyways...this post is short....cuz...well...got mucho reading to do....damn you guys have it way easier in med/DO school...heheh....j,k ;)

Hi!
Can anyone give me more information about the "apts across the street from campus"???
Rent, environment,.....anything at all will be great. Thanks, guys!

Anniejojo- Sorry I didn't answer this sooner. The "apartments across the street" are referring to The Plaza and Park Apts (same company I think). The Park apts. are for seniors and are a little bit nicer and less expensive.. if you can get folks to co-sign that it might be an option.

The Plaza apts. are... okay for the most part, but you might want to walk around to get a feel for them before you put any money down. They have four models of singles (ranging from $675 for Plan A and it goes up) and two models of double apts. which require a little more planning since those don't open as fast. If you wanted to live alone, you should be able to decide between the two smallest sizes of single apt. models.. I am living in a Plan B which has plenty of room and is about $710. Utilities are approximately $15 a month. My apartment happens to be in adequate shape.. nothing impressive, but I can live here. The single apts. have a wall a/c unit for heating/cooling (the kind that sticks out through the wall on the outside).. double apts. have a vented system.

The environment isn't all that pretty and once in awhile, there are problems here and there in various parts of the complex (i.e. isolated cases of burglary). Personally, I haven't had any trouble in my part of the complex.. so for the most part it's okay. Females may not feel as safe walkin around at night, but it's not hard finding a classmate who lives around the complex to walk with you at night if you study at school in the evenings. Since the wall for the apt. complexes are adjacent to the parking lots for our school, the security guards will usually escort you to the gates of the apts.

Overall, I guess you could classify The Plaza apts. as slightly "ghetto" to adequate, but if you need to save a little money, need to live in a single, and want a 2-3 minute walk to school it's not a bad deal. I can offer more input if you find you might be interested in living around here in the future. Most of the COMP people here don't live directly in Pomona so they can offer opinions on the nicer areas around.

Just letting you folks know we're still here if you need us!

'Sup COMPer's!!! I notice our 2006 thread was needing a reply or two so......

How are ya'll doing and what have ya been upto??
Myself just working, working, and working to get my next tuition deposit. (Also scheduling myself some ample party and play time) Also decided to take a human physiology class this semester. I know I know its a rough schedule but someones got to do it!!

Anywho, lemme know 'sup with ya'll and catch ya lata...

bump.. that reminds me.. I need to drop off a tuition check for this semester (that I'm currently in already.. hehe).

Bump.. enjoy President's Day weekend, folks! Anyone get information from the school yet on anything?

Hi.
It is possible if you look hard enough. I am married too when I started school (my husband is in the same class with me). We lived in the Park/Plaza for 2 years (when the rent was $675/2 bedrooms), and it was okay. It's not the safest place to live, but we saved time on commuting.
There are plenty of apts along the Towne street. Within 10-15 min of surface road commuting, you should be able to find nice apt in a safer area with your price range: Diamond Bar, Claremont, and Chino Hills.
I have DSL in Park/Plaza.

good luck,
Pei WesternU/DO 2002
P.S. I sold most of my books, but I still have some required MSI books availble: lab books for Path and Histo (the ones with all the pic), anatomy book and the Deadbody book for cheap! Email me if any future MSI are interested.

Tweety- Yes, I have DSL too although I'm not sure which company Pei uses (I use a company called www.dslextreme.com which I found in the process of trying to find another company that serviced the area besides Verizon.)

What part of the U.S. are you from Tweety? I know back east in Baltimore, it wasn't too hard to find cheap places to live, but overall the prices are a bit higher over here. I suppose $675 wouldn't be too bad for two people in a single, but I might feel a little safer living about 10 minutes away and living in Chino Hills/Diamond Bar/Claremont and perhaps paying maybe $750-$800 for a single if possible. I would have to check into prices for a single in these areas because most of my classmates have doubles at the moment...

Hey melancholy, ur from Houston right? Did you attend Texas A&M?.....just curious, I'm an Aggie and I saw that one had been accepted in last year's class, so i thought that might've been u....

H-town- Hey.. actually, I didn't go to school in Texas. I graduated from Hopkins back in '99. I actually am not sure who graduated from TAMU, but I think I know most of the folks from Texas in my class.. just a matter of never asking what college they went to. Did you happen to go to high school in Houston? I went to Bellaire High School..

TweetyPie- Wow.. another Texan.. awesome! They don't have efficiencies here, so the smallest 1 bdrm would be the cheapest deal here in the Plaza. I recall a story floating around about one student who was supposedly held up in the parking lot of the school in broad daylight last year, but aside from that, not a whole lot of stories stick out in my mind regarding the area and crime with students. It maybe a little rough, but I would definitely feel safe walking around in the daytime for the most part as there are usually other people walking around too. I can say that a pair of classmates had their apartment broken into, but they lived on one side of the apt. complex that I sorta felt wasn't the greatest side. I like my side of the complex a lot better and I don't know why.. just seems a bit quieter and safer, although I have other friends in the Plaza who haven't had problems for the most part. I have a feeling locals probably have a little more chance of run-in's with problems. There is also an option to rent out a garage pretty much next to your apt. unit for an extra $10-$15 a month... so at night, you could drive to school and drive back into the apt. complex. I still do that once in awhile because I either had too many books or I didn't want to walk when it was a bit too chilly for me outside. That rent for Dallas sounds about right.. I've never had to rent an apt. in Texas, but I'd love to see those prices sooner or later.

Telephone # for Plaza.. (909) 620-7368 I believe. The manager of the place, Dennis, seems like a pretty slick guy so I get the feeling he can be a bit lenient sometimes with moving-in dates, perhaps special moving-in rates, etc. (that reminds me.. sometimes they have referral deals as well so it might be possible to get a deal on that and split the extra money.. a little perk I guess) Also, if you end up seriously looking at the Plaza, let me know if you can get an apartment # and apt. letter (They have mini-complexes within the community which are named complex A, B, AA, BB, etc.) so I can perhaps get a sense for where you are in the complex. Hope this helps.

Hey,

I was wondering if you guys could help me.

I have all of my Stafford loan eligibility (did not take out any Stafford loans in undergrad). But here's the problem. My credit is in shambles. You see, because I didn't qualify for any federal or state aid in undergrad (I was not yet a U.S. citizen)I had no choice but to use mostly credit cards to pay for my undergrad. This was a last resort. If I had not done it I would not have been able to attend school and would not be where I am today.

But after using all that credit and not being able to jump right into the workforce to start paying it all back because I was applying to med school, I found myself getting behind and now my credit is completely ruined.

Here is my question. Will I be able to draw only Stafford Loans (which would suffice) which I've been told is approx. 8,500 Sub. & 36,667 Unsub and non-credit based?

Does COMP require to see my credit report for any reason?

Would you, Melancholy , or anyone else have any insight on this?

Hey Melancholy,

Hopkins, huh, nice! I had a cousin there, Arif Kidwai, but he probably was gone before you I believe. And actually, yeah I went to Klein High School, i dunno if u have heard of it, I know exactly where Bellaire is, the Kaplan Center was right on Bellaire, that Dreaded MCAT prep course. Well, see ya soon........classes start in Late july or early August right guys? Thanks

Hi guys...I enjoy reading the posts here a lot.

WU/COMP wants me to interview but I like TUCOM a lot as well. I know that TUCOM is new and WU/COMP is more established but I continuously find myself in a quandry - TUCOM or WU/COMP?

I know this question has been brought up before but can anyone out there concisely explain (or rate) the differences/similarities between TUCOM and WU/COMP? I've heard many mixed things.

Thanks!

I think the best thing to do is interview at both..and see which you like better.
I am at COMP..recieved interviews from both...and declined my Toro interview..because I had already done ~9 others..and was tired.
COMP students are very friendly, and I am sure you can get a feel of what you like better...the best way is to experience both...and make a decision from there...

Hi Careofme,
TUCOM's big selling point is that they have higher GPA and MCAT standards than COMP. However, I think that info is inflated because I personally know 3 students that were accepted to TUCOM and were not accepted to COMP. I also know 2 students that attend COMP that were accepted at TUCOM, but were wait-listed at COMP, then finally made it off the list. Additionally, I have heard that TUCOM is having big problems with 3rd and 4th year rotation sites. It is probably no big deal if you do not mind going to Las Vegas or Chino Valley. I would definitely investigate the rotations situation before you sign. I admit that COMP's rotations are not world class, but they are fairly well established and decent enough to learn the skills needed for residency.

MSII

lots of people compare TUCOM and COMP, esp those who want to stay in california...TUCOM has a 95% match rate for residency - that tell me the program is strong and the students are learning what they should be...TUCOM also seems to be a tighter knit campus than COMP to me (i'm obviously going to TUCOM)... I also recently spoke with an intern friend at UCSF who said he just rotated with a Touro medical student and was very impressed by her skills and knowledge...lots of things at Touro are still in the works but it's a school with tremendous potential and room for action - i feel like i'll have more control over my own training at TUCOM...so, these are just some of my thoughts for those who are wavering between the two schools - just choose a program you think you'll be most happy with...(oh, i got accepted to COMP too but prefer scene up in northern cal)...

-that's all...

the grass isn't really that green on the other side of the fence. Go to COMP. WAAAYY better school! Go COMP!

Tweetypie- Hmm.. I am sure that the Plaza does not have any special arrangement with COMP students at all, but I'd think they would like to get more students there because students don't tend to be huge sources of problems as far as tenants go. If you're a student, if you can provide some sort of bank statement or an old pay stub that would probably work as well. I think showing somehow that you can afford to pay rent should be sufficient, but I think they are pretty flexible as there are people of all financial ranges who live in the Plaza and they have dealt with WUHS students in the past, so it shouldn't be a problem.

The Park & Plaza knows you are a student on loan, and they will be okay with it. I know because they assumed I am on financial aid when I told them I was a student at COMP. I am actually on Air Force scholarship. So as long as you can show them your financial aid, you will be okay.

cheers,
Pei
WU/COMP 2002

another thing, most apartments require a co-sign. this makes sure that if you have financial aid or have come across financial trouble, the co-signer (parents, spouse, etc.) guarentees the owners that rent will be covered throughout the lease. that's how i figured out how i can get away from the plaza.

ah the plaza, i heard so many good things about that place...
~j

Pyoj- What'd you do to get your co-sign for your apt.. did your parents fax some signature over? Hmm.. maybe I can get a make-believe "spouse" to pay my bills...

I'm the Texas Aggie of the class (WHOOP! class of '99). That's bad ass that another Aggie will be joining our COMP family. Where did you see that I was accepted? In the OPSA office? What was your major? Mine was biomedical science. Who did you have for physiology? Dr. Herman or Dr. Hunter? I still keep in touch with Dr. Herman once and a while. WOW! I'm so psyched about you coming here. Hope I get to be your second year!

Hey H-townCOMP, they don't have Freebirds here, so make sure you get your fill before you come out here! That's the one thing I miss the most about College Station...mmmmm burritos.

TweetyPie, I'm from Dallas too! What part are you from? I'm from far north Dallas, and actually taught in the Plano ISD for a year before coming here. If you're moving here with your husband you can find descent one bedrooms in Claremont or Chino Hills both of which are very eye pleasing and not as hmmm...how do I describe Pomona...let me just say this, instead of using street signs to get around I use the gang tags to tell me where I am. It sucks when the city paints over them...I get really lost.

Hey A-Val, or rather HOWDY!! I actually did read it at OPSA but also the Western University website. Man, if u want I'll bring u some freebirds, lol, or Wings and More, my favorite. Anyways, I was class of 2001. I was a biology major and didn't have to take Physiology, now I wish I had. Oh well, I'm trying to study that stuff now.....any tips on what I might do with my spare time now? Alright, hope I get for my secon year guide too, thanks alot, see ya later....

Hey A-val.. Plano.. did you go to PSHS? That monster of a school that seems more like a community college than a high school.. and only for 11-12th grades too! I visited Plano a few times.. all I can say is "master-planned communities". Wow.. only problem was everything closed too early :/.

Yeah, Plano is like a bubble city (at least the West side) very little there but nice houses and places to eat.

H-townCOMP , all I can advise you as to what to do with your free time is to enjoy it, but I was in your shoes once too and I hated it when people would tell me that. So, if you're hell bent on studying I suggest reviewing your anatomy. Anatomy can really make life tough...so can biochem, but no amount of studying can prepare you for the onslaught known as Dr. Kiick (biochem prof). I suggest buying the Anatomy Coloring Book by Kapit and Elson and working with it. It'll give you the basics and it's not too hard to deal with...it a coloring book for cryin' out loud! Oh, definately know your bones BEFORE you come to school, they don't teach 'em and on the first day they tell you to go and learn them on your own. Other than that don't stress (you'll get plenty come August), kick back, and enjoy life.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone!! I found out that I got in today. What a relief. Hope to meet you guys in the summer.

Congrats Amaecua! Feel free to ask any questions about COMP/WUHS/the area in general. It seems like you're from around the area so I'm sure you know how nice it is to stick around SoCal... :) .

Amaecua, Welcome :) Hey is anyone planning to commute? Anyone from Orange County? Just curious :) I'm thinking about carpooling.

CADO2B,

Good to hear there will be another student from the OC. OC represent! Although I won't be able to carpool with you, you shouldn't have a problem finding another student to rideshare with.

Eric

I just got accepted to COMP a few days ago!! Yay!!! Well now on to some concerns. I'm coming from Phoenix/Tucson, Arizona (yes, it's hot here in the summer). I know that they have roommate matching program at COMP but I'm not sure I trust that very much. Do any of you have suggestions on the best way to find a roommate? I don't know anyone that's going to the LA area from here. :( Oh, and what other areas beside Claremont are around Pomona? I'm planning to come out to LA again after graduation to check it out since I'm not very familiar with it...

Help... Thanks!

Greetings to all!!

I posted this question on the 2005 thread but thought that you guys might know also....Do any of you guys know about the laptop issue? I was reading back to some year 2000 posts and they were saying that the school buys the laptops for you. Is that still true? I'm wanting to get one in the next few days.

Hey NX811. By any chance did you interview on the 12th? Anyways, there are a lot of other places that you can rent apartments/houses. It depends on how far away from Pomona you want to go and how much you want to pay. I live in Covina and it takes me about 20 minutes to get to COMP. The cities around Pomona are San Dimas, La Verne, Chino, Glendora, Azusa, and Walnut. You can also check out pennysaverusa.com and look in the real estate section. Hope this helps.
