I did my anesthesiology rotation through Henry Ford back in September. I am from Wayne State and I got a chance to talk to a lot of the surgical residents and attendings. First of all, the hospital is beautiful and they have state of the art equipment in the OR. Your still in Detroit so you do get an extreme amount of cases - level I trauma center. From what I saw in the OR, the residents did most of the operating and the attendings were very helpful and interesting in teaching. I am not sure about how they place their residents in fellowships. I overheard one surgeon saying they have never placed a resident in a pediatric fellowship, but mind you this is hearsay. Finally, the chief of surgery is amazing... Dr. Dulchavsky. Check out his CV. The place is very resident friendly. Hope this helps.

I got rejected at this place already so no hope for me but it seems like this is a very strong program.

The current program director and another attending at my hopsital both trained at Henry Ford and they are both amazing surgeons.

I'd love to train here if I had the chance.

Some months there will be 20+ whipple procedues on the board, and the comments below are correct: a great deal of exposure and very competent residents. The lecture schedule is good, and the physicians are nice to work around. i did a trauma rotation there as well as SICU and was impressed with the atmosphere, residents, and teaching. Surgeons do run this hospital, whether others want to admit this or not. Very good team-oriented atmosphere and the specialists are busy.

Ford is up there on my list. Dr. Dulchavsky is awesome. The place is NOT malignant. The surgical attendings rock, many are well connected at places like Harvard, etc. They are very encouraging, not self-absorbed. Dr. Patton is well known in critical care. There is on-campus housing for the residents. Big transplant department, an occasional student has flown out to Texas and the like to pick up heart, kidney, and other offle. As a student I felt well-integrated into their trauma team, and was able to contribute to my ability.
