Are substance abuse and eating disorder medicine part of the psychiatric field, or is this some other specialty? And while we are on the topic, is there any measurable progress being made in the treatment of these conditions? Are we advancing the science?

Both are large part of psychiatry. Substance dependence is pretty common among patients with psych d/o. Of particular interest is alcohol withdrawal (DTs have a 10% mortality).

SSRIs have been shown to help with bulimia. But long-term psychotherapy is needed. It's really a chronic condition and difficult to treat with meds alone.

Eating d/o- Specialized EDUs and/or specially trained therapists and other MH professionals. Meds not firstline tx-needs long term psychotx. You will have your choice!
SUD- U can do a fellowship in it this days-can work in detox settings(more medical than psych) or have your own OPs.
Hope this helps.
