Hello All,
I am new to this forum and I was hoping that I could get some information from some of the more experienced people out there. I am 23 year old African American recent college graduate with a degree in Computer Science. My overall GPA stands at a 3.2, however, my science GPA is currently at a 2.84 and that is without any chemistry courses. Other than chemistry, I have satisfied the prereqs for most dental schools. I will be going back to school starting this fall, as a non-degree seeking student, to start the chemistry requirements for Dental School. My goal would be to apply for dental schools for Fall 2005.

I would like to know, given that I do well in my chemistry courses my chances of getting into a dental program. I only mention my race, because I know sometimes it is a factor in the admissions process and that there are lots of opportunities for minorities. If anyone out there has any helpful information or insight it would be greatly appreciated.

DaktoorTaj,

I think that if you try hard your next year in school and get very good grades you should have a pretty good chance. I would recommend taking chemistry as well as some other upper level science courses to show the adcomms that you can do well in science classes being your science GPA is a little low. Also be sure to start shadowing dentists and getting volunteer experience. Grades aren't everything. Good luck!

Taj,

i suggest you do whatever it takes to bring your science GPA up to at least 3.2 then you will have a good chance. why resort to affirmative action when you can get in with your own scores?? you have a whole years to bring up your GPA.

good luck to you

I just wanted to know why there are not a lot of african american dentist in the United States? Is there a stigma attached with African american wanting to become dentist.

As far as affirmative action is concerned, get what you can get if that helps you get into dental school, by all means use what you have to your advantage and if affirmative action helps you use it then. On the other hand grades go a long way as well, so if you have a year to get your grades up. go for it and welcome to the exciting world of dentistry.

Good luck

Many schools encourage African Americans to apply. I know that Michigan strives for a diverse class. Do well on the DAT and those chemistry courses and you have a very good chance at UofM.

Thank you all for your advice. If anyone else has comments or advice please post.

the article is very interesting, but it fails to mention about the percentage of black applicant among the pool.
