Hi everyone, I was wondering if you can offer me any advice on what my chances are for admission for med school. Also, any suggestions on where I should apply to? The reason I am asking this is because I hear that ca schools are impossible to get into. thanks.

Cal resident at UCI
GPA: 3.5
MCAT: 30
Age: 24
Major: Biochemical Engineering
Volunteered abroad in Thailand, Kenya, and Costa Rica (about 2 months each)
Some clinical exposures
Some research experience

As a cali. res. your chances unfortunately are not good if you want to stay in california for a M.D. program. Consider a masters program to get a higher gpa. Also aim for at least 11's on the mcat sections.

your numbers are solid for D.O. programs in cali. though. They are similar to mine. I'm considering this myself because I really want to study in cali.

Another alternative is to set up residency in another state. I've known people who have moved to Texas from cali. with those numbers and they are in M.D. programs now in that state.

As a cali. res. I feel your pain. I too am frustrated that geography will be playing a large force in my destiny.

Your chances seem very good for a TX MD school. Many good schools would love that mcat. Remember unless you go to Harvard or Johns Hopkins (ignore US News and World report)all other med schools are about the same (yes, we have Nobel laureates in TX). Make the most of medschool and you could find yourself practicing exactly where you want to.

One important note:

If you want to establish residency in TX, you will have to live and work in TX for a full year WITHOUT GOING TO SCHOOL before you can establish residency.

If and when you do establish residency though, TX MD programs are definitely easier to get into than CA programs, but they're not a sure walk in either.

I just find this so depressing! My stats are similar to dental_i...
Age:26
GPA: 3.46 (according to AMCAS)
MCAT 34-36 (thanks to the 13-15 verbal range I'm not sure how to report my score)

My undergrad degree is in Chemical Engineering from Wash U St.Louis- did some graduate work in Biomedical Engineering and have worked for 2 years in the medical device industry as an Engineer.
Boy, it would be nice to stay in California near my support system for school. What about UC-Irvine? Is it as bad as UCSD in terms of trying to get in? You'd think that being a resident would help... are there just too many people or what?
