Besides Patch Adams, Gross Anatomy, and Getting In, what are some other cool medical movies?

After graduation, I've been on a movie-kick, and I'm getting pumped for med. school this coming fall. What better way to do that than to see actors squirm over cadavers and attach the word "Stat" to the end of every sentence?

a classic EMS related one is "Mother, Jugs, and Speed"

what is that funny movie about a medical student trying getting into med school?!

it was a comedy ridiculing the whole process....it starts off if I remember, with the guy sitting in an office and the interviewer saying....sorry sir, we can't let u into our school....

ur gpa is in the 93 percentile...we clearly accept pple above a 97 percentile....u can't cut it buddy...or some **** like that? u know?

Cider House Rules

Brain Dead (w/Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton, horror)
Anatomy (w/that girl from "Run Lola, Run" as a medical student, thriller, in german)
The Re-Animator (Medical students bring cadavers back to life, wow)
Suture (from the writer/director team that brought us "the deep end", a real trip)
there are more....

On the funny side there's also Bad Medicine with Steve Guttenburg (sp?) The dude from the Police Acadamy movies...about going to med school in Mexico...
On the serious side is The Doctor...about a doctor who gets cancer and has to find out what its like to be the patient...

"Wit" - on the serious side, another one about an academic who gets cancer. But really, really good (originally a play)

If you feel like torturing yourself, you can try the old "So you want to be a doctor?" series about HMS.

I love the movie Awakenings.

"Coma" just came to mind..that's going back a few yrs
"Gross Anatomy" was mildly diverting

•Cider House Rules•••••I hated that movie... I was offended on so many levels... my lord that movie was just aweful!! (in my opinion)

There's a series on the Dicovery Channel called "Hopkins 24/7" that's all about students at Johns Hopkins. They actually follow around students through all for years... talk about an ego-fest. 🙂 It's pretty lame... but if you're curious it comes on every once in awhile.

I also loved Bad Medicine.

My personal favorite is Vital Signs with Diane Lane  - about 3rd year students.

"OUTBREAK" with Renee Rousseau and Dustin Hoffman. It's Hollywood's twist to a story about the spread of a deadly virus similar to Richard Prestin's book, THE HOT ZONE (true story too, which makes it the most horrifying book I've ever read... I was paranoid just holding it in my hands!)

John Q is a good movie for those who want to see doctors put in a bad light. I saw it last night, and it made me really mad about the way they stereotyped all physicians. It was clear that they had an agenda.

Also, if you get the Discovery Health channel there's stuff on it all the time about medical students and doctors. Late at night they also have a show called Operation where a doctor gives commentary about what he's doing as the surgery is going on. Hopkins 24/7 comes on a lot, and there was a Lifeline on today that focused on the lives of medical students, it showed a 4th year med student in an interview for residency, and there was a segment on the lives of residents.

You can own it for less than $5 (if you're talking about the flick with Steve Guttenberg

•••••REally? Did we watch the same movie?

I agree that the movie made the hospital seem like a money-hungry business (which it is) and the head heart surgeon seem heartless (which he wasn't), but I never had the impression that the movie was ragging on all doctors. The med student (or resident, don't remember) seemed pretty caring, right? Or perhaps that's BEFORE he becomes hardened and jaded by the messed up health care system that we have in this country.

QB]••••Patch Adams was a "cool" movie??? Man! I got ripped off by my judgment then.....again! 😛

Desperate Measures, with Hugh Grant (of the Divine Brown fame) and Gene Hackman comes to mind. A bit far-fetched, but entertaining nonetheless.

-Critical Care (w/James Spader as an resident, Sidney Lumet directs, dark comedy about life support)
-Playing God (w/David Duchovny and Angelina Jolie, Mulder plays a surgeon who lost his lisence due to a nasty drug habit and later gets involved in the L.A. underworld)
-Dead Ringers (w/Jermey Irons playing identical twins who are gynecologists, David Cronenberg directs, very creepy)
-The Kingdom [Riget](Lars von Trier's miniseries about a haunted hospital in denmark, very spooky)
-The Elephant Man (w/Anthony Hokins and John Hurt, the David Lynch Classic)

Oh, I forgot to add Breast Men starring David Schwimmer. Reasons to go into plastics.

I had forgotten about Vital Signs and the Kingdom was really trippy... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
