What are some of the reasons for the steady increase in the number of applicants for med schools?

The number of applicants to med schools has been constantly increasing over the past few years. I do realize that being a doctor ensures more job security regardless of the state of our economy, but that doesn't really fully convince me as to why more people want to pursue medicine. What are some other reasons (and possibly more convincing) that explain this?

in b4 "chicks, power, money, and chicks" joke.

1. Helping people in a unique way/saving lives
2. Respect/prestige/etc
3. Money
4. Interesting to learn

Economy is pretty much the main reason. When the economy tanked in the 70s the number of applicants grew substantially and med school admissions became super competitive. That's when many of the Carib schools popped-up taking advantage if the situation. When things started to look-up in the 80s applicant numbers and competition trended down. Also, as reckoner said more people.
