Yo,

I am from southern Illinois attending the U of I. SIU would be nice, but I am interested in attending dental school in california, colorado, or flordia (maybe boston?). I am early in the application process, my stats are solid, and I haven't taken the DAT yet. I just want to get an idea of what schools I should research. What school are fun? What schools have beautiful campuses? Which ones are the best!?

Thanks

Hey Eric...check out University of the Pacific's school of dentistry. It's in San Francisco, California. UOP is the only dental school in the nation that has a three year program. The facilities are top notch, the the faculty is awesome, and San Francisco is a very dynamic city. Since you are early in the application process I'd look into UOP as a choice for california! Good luck to you!

It seemed to me that the students were way layed back at Nova Southeastern University. The beach is just 15 miles away, palm trees everywhere, etc. Also the facilities were nice seeing as how the school is only 7 or 8 years old. I was torn between NSU and Maryland but decided to go to Maryland.

When you are searching for your ultimate "cool school" remember that since you are a resident of Illinois, you will be considered an Out-of-state applicant at other schools. Colorado is a great location in denver close to out-doors fun, but only accepts 2-3 out-of-staters each year (if you aren't WICHE).

15 miles in south FL is very far. It is crowded as hell down there. My wife went to Nova and when we wanted to go to the beach, it was an easy 40 min. On top of that...try to find parking when you get there. And if you do find parking you usally pay. Oh yeah, live closer to the school. She lived 10 miles away to save some $$$, in the morning her commutte ran up to an hour with the avg being about 45 min. Mid day it wasn't bad. You could get to Nova in about 15-20 min. Oh yeah, she just got her diploma...damn thing is the size of a billboard. Its 20 x 15.5 inches 😱

By the way, NYU is the coolest school 🙂 Most students are laid back and have a great time...not to many gunners. NYC has so much to do I do not think I will explore the whole place before my 4 years are up.

Another vote for UoP here...

Chicago is cool, but the snow sucks. Which part of S. Illinois are you from?

there are no cool dental schools, only cool dental students.

Right on, i'm from Effingham.

I have to agree that Indiana does have a lot of "cooler" people.

not to mention the girls. i am not single, but if i were......

oh boy.

Yeah, dental school is as cool as you make it. But there are even limitations on that.

Lamest Dental Schools in my opinion: UConn, Detroit Mercy, ...

Oh, I see you're gonna be going to UCONN AUG2UAG. I make no apology for my comment, and I didn't say it to stir up trouble (be a troll). Out of the dozen or so schools I interviewed at, those two were the ones that stuck out as places where I wouldn't be so happy.

Detroit Mercy: a bunch of your classmates don't even live in the US, they commute from Ontario, there aren't any places to go right after class near the school, people live scattered all over the place ...

UCONN: I'm not familiar with any places to chill in Farmington, Hartford is a bit of a drive from Farmington, in this case a small dental class would be a negative in my opinion....

You shouldn't direct your anger about my opinion of UCONN into calling me a troll.

P.S. I'm very aware of Yah-E's opinions of me, that quote was my signature for about a week. 😀

Alright, I'll leave this thread and go back to my hole. Probably have more fun there than I'd have atUCONN. (jk!) Man, I'm not a prankster on every thread you know. Take care.

ANother vote for UOP here. Great facility, awesome dean, friendly and helpful classmates (most of them). Great city to live in, always something going in SF. Supportive faculty and staff. Dental school is not a cake walk, its gonna be hard no matter where you go. But UOP faculty are really try to make the process as enjoyable as possible.

Actually, I am quite upset by your opinion too. I have decided to attend Detroit Mercy next year and I don't think it is a bad school at all and who cares if everyone there commutes? Let me guess, you go to U of M or really want to go there? Your attitude would fit in perfect. You also have a problem with Tufts and I don't understand that.

Another vote for UOP Dugoni School of Dentistry. I always had my heart set on going to UCSF because of their reputation. After interviewing at both UCSF and UOP, I can say that there is no competition --- UOP is a better school (at least that's what I think). The faculty and fellow students are genuinely kind and helpful. The facilities rock! Many UOP dental grads come out confident in their clinical skills and obtain a business sense. UOP prepares you to be an excellent dentist.

Tufts is another school that I hold in high regard. Boston is a fun city if you can handle the weather. This is another school that has a supportive faculty and friendly atmosphere. Tufts is a school that produces well-rounded dentists.

Aw, I didn't say detroit mercy was a bad school. Ok, here's the scoop - I'm just very big on campus life and the community of a school. Although I'm sure detroit mercy has a great community and it's fun, I feel like it would be a little more work to be tight after classes. And I think that being tight with people from your class outside of school is "cool" (hence why I posted in this thread). Do you know what I mean here?

And as for UMichigan, I think it's a pretty great school. But UMichigan has nothing on Detroit Mercy when it comes to clinical and diversity.

Tufts... well, that's a whole other story!!

Sorry to take the negative spin on the thread.

Ok well thank you for clearing up your reasoning and I am sorry about what I said, I posted when I was upset. Yes, I do agree that being close with your class outside of school is what makes a school 'cool.' Hopefully that will not be too much work at Detroit. Anyways. good luck to everyone!

Please share your thoughts about Tufts, delicious.

Interestingly enough, I think students tend to drift from this philosophy substantially as dental school progresses. By the end, there are probably a handful or less of people that most students want to be tight with, much less speak to.

Oh man, what are you apologizing for!! Your post wasn't rude at all. Good luck at detroit. :luck: Their new clinic is pretty sweet.

And tufts, it's a awesome school no doubt. I just had trouble with their admissions people scheduling an interview, and found them a little unaccomodating. I ended up not interviewing there because of it. But I guess they can't be accomodating to everyone, right? So my beef with tufts is very superficial and probably undeserving. It was just the only school i had trouble with, that's all.

And along that line I would like to add UPenn. Why? Because I will be attending school there, that's why! 😀

I second that!

UOP has been called "the disneyland of dental schools." now how can you argue with that??? best sign that I have seen in my interviews and research that a school is quality is if the students are happy there, and UOP's got it. wow im cheesy.

hey watch out, I am totally against what delicious says, but dont dis U of M. i am coming all the way from cali to go there, its a great school. laters. anyways U of M is way better than mercy, you can see by US rankigns and world rankings. laters.

Well, then I guess it sucks to be you!! (jk)

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic in that post or not, but if you weren't: you're against what I said? Hmm... Was it the "I think it (Michigan) is a pretty great school" you don't agree with?

Both schools have their strengths. If you know anything, itsy bitsy anything about those two schools, you'll know that Mercy is better for clinical experience.

Man, I don't know how I manage to get into so much trouble on these forums!!

Columbia by far the coolest school. Just one look at how the staff walk/talk at the interview, so proffesional.

my interviewer at Columbia was by far the coolest DDS ever. He currently lives in Jimi Hendrix's apartment while he was writing Electric Ladyland. Also Columbia is, hands down, in the coolest, most cultured, alive and exciting city in the world (well, 100 blocks north of it, but there is an express subway right to penn station).

How would you even begin researching which dental school you would want to go to? Other than knowing which state you prefer. Is there a book out there that list the statistics of the schools in reference to the board passing rates, first year drop out rates, etc.??

UNLV is totally cool. We are for sure a party class! I mean, Vegas... we have to be, right?

Sure, the ADEA guide to dental schools. You can purchase it from www.adea.org

It lists all of that info you mentioned.

Does that really make him cool?! I mean apartments with celebrity history like that usually cost extra. So, this guy paid extra to be able to tell people that story. But I'd probably be impressed too. 😀

I'm kinda surprised to see you say that. I'd say all of manhattan island is pretty cool. You don't have to be at or south of central park to feel it.

But I agree, Columbia has a very cool dental school. And NYC is awesome.

Yes, it makes him very cool.

Hi ItsGavinC,

THanks for the website... is it this book? American Dental Education Association Official Guide to Dental Schools

I was reading the descriptions and didn't come across it mentioning about the passing rates of students, drop out rates, etc.

Thanks again. Just wanted to make sure before I buy the $35 book. :-D
