What are you doing to celebrate (if you get in) or cheer up (if you do not). I'm planning aroad trip around the US since I have only been to like 3 states. How about the rest of you?

SMW you're back? How was your interview the other day?!

Steamboat, Colorado in March.

8 weeks backpacking around spain/italy/greece :) I can't wait!!!

I wish I were a college student...

To celebrate Baylor, I drove to Boston from my Penn interview for a nice meal cooked by my dad (who is the greatest cook in the world) and champagne. In addition, I am going to buy a couch and keep going to work. Sigh.

Backpacking in Greece (don't forget to take the overnight ferry to Crete--there is no more beautiful place on this earth than Crete--and to see Makrinitsa, cool medieval city near the ski slopes) and Spain (Madrid is a blast and Marbella relaxing, but Ronda is the coolest place) sounds like my idea of paradise... Enjoy!

I bought a national parks pass and am going to take a month and hopefully see as many parks as possible....ending up in alaska
otherwise I will be in vermont fishing......

Are you guys doing your travel alone or with friends?

My recipe: 1 bad ass motorcycle (looks like one of the Kawasaki models right now) + 1 tattoo = me trying to be a badass and thankful i'm in  --Trek

SMW-I vote for Santorini. You can't beat the sunsets there.

I'm planning a four month vacation (I've been saving up for this forever) hitting SW China, Taiwan (family ties) and Germany & France (visiting friends). I can't wait!!!

mma, thanks for the tips, I got my eurailpass, flight to madrid, and I know when I get back from the heat of this trip im headed for cold in chicago for 4 years. I'm counting the days.

e'01, I'm going with my girlfriend who's celebrating the same thing :)

Thats awesome Coop :) You guys have fun!

Coop, some more Europe advice; go to Interlaken, Switzerland, if you can swing it. It is a beautiful place, probably my favorite of all the places I went on the Continent.

This summer, I want to take three weeks and hike the Long Trail in Vermont, 270 miles from Mass-a-chestnuts to Canada.

Oops, my Santorini advice was for Coop.

April- Bahamas with the rents
June- Best friend from high school's graduation and boyfriend's birthday, so I'm roadtripping
July- Disney World with a bunch of friends
August- Spending time in New England!

Yah, now if I could only figure out how to handle my dumb a$$ boss!

I'm going to see the Rockies the week after I graduate. I'll be heading through Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. I've never been out west, and I can't wait. :)

•SMW you're back? How was your interview the other day?!•••••Yep, got back yesterday, and fly out again tonight for Philly. It's nice to have interviews, but all this travelling is exhausting, not to mention expensive (not complaining, just noting). I think my Tulane interviews (all 3 of them!) went pretty well, but I'm not as confident as I was after my Albany and SLU interviews. Interviewed with a chaplain, a woman psychiatrist, and (get this!) an SDNer!!! Interestingly, Dean Pisano (sp?) and his wife are visiting my home state this summer -- he told me not to get away without talking to him, and I ended up chatting with him for about 30 minutes about my favorite places in Alaska.

I loved New Orleans, the school and the students. I kind of wonder how I'd make myself study there!! Went to 2 med school functions, block party and barbeque, as they'd just finished with exams. Had a lovely student host (who picked me up from the airport!!), and got to spend time with a friend from my undergrad school. Couldn't have asked for a better time. Even SuperBowl craziness did not intrude too much (can you tell I'm not much of a football fan?)

Wow, awesome SMW.

New Orleans sounds much more exciting than Winnipeg, Manitoba. :D I'm beginning to wish I'd applied there. I looked at Hawaii, but they have that stupid residency requirement. :D

I don't think I'd mind the travelling. I haven't seen that much of the world, so it'd be nice to just go around to different schools. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be happening. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

coop,
I DEFINITELY second the Crete recommendation... in 7 weeks of backpacking around Europe, Crete definitely tops the list. Try to go to some of the smaller towns, especially in the south. Ahhh I am really jealous now, I want to go back!

cali girl,
How much time do you have? I would say just let yourself drift around the Greek islands, some islands are known for having a big nightlife/club scene where as others are a little more remote and scenic. Also Greece is wicked cheap. You can fly into either Athens or Crete (Iraklio- sp?), and during the summers the ferries run between the islands several times daily. Have fun! :D

just wanted to say thanks for all the great travel advice people. I hope everyone who's starting next year can get out and blow off some steam before school starts.

Champagne dinner tonight with my folks and boyfriend to celebrate getting in to Columbia, then immediately afterward flying off to interview at Vermont, Rochester, and Mt. Sinai. Am I nuts or what? Still looking forward to Acapulco in April (with the'rents to visit my little brother who's an exchange student in Mexico).

Ah, it's so great to hear so many people are planning to visit my home country for vacationing. Okay as far as Greece goes, don't stay in Athens for more than you have to see the Acropolis, and then head on out to one of the islands. Some tips: Myconos and Santorini which are beautiful islands in their own right are heavily bombared with tourists, and can be overrated during times. Some other islands to check out if you have time are Kephalonia (the island that was featured in the movie Cornelli's Mandolin), Zakyntho, and Leukada which are located in the Ionian Sea to the left of Greece rather than to the right of greece where Myconos, Santorini, and the Cyclades are located. In addition, don't forget to visit Knossos in Crete if you take the overnight journey. Knossos was the center of the Minoan civilazation and in mythology the palace was supposed to contain the Minotaur in it's labyrinth.

Save money by eating only Greek food (that's alot of gyros) or salads if you are vegetarian and avoid eating meals at restaurants (taverna's are way better anyways).

PM me if you have any questions,

OPA!

Hey coalboy that is really cool! Goddard shelter is my favorite overnight hike! (from bennington) Have fun, I thought about doing that this summer but I have done so many parts over the years....

I planned a 3 week trip to Hawaii in July. Just kinda hang out, do a little surfing, get some sun (notmuch sun in SF in the winter!). I can't wait.

I want to go somewhere but I know the money should go towards med school expenses. I've been thinking about two things: flying as a courier (super cheap discounted airfair) or teaching english in taiwan ($575 program fee which INCLDUES airfare, housing and medical insurance). The only problem with the latter is that the end date may intefere with the begginning of med school. I also applied to a camp counselor position at Oxford, UC berkely and Emory. Anything to get away from NY!

E'01: i live in cali and u live in ny. since you want to get out of ny, why dont you come and live my life for a while and i'll go live your life at ny. u think anyone would notice? :D
