Hey all you SDNers...sorry I havent been around! Just got out of tons of classes from the last week! I was just wondering though...what exactly is everyone else thinking of doing during this summer "transition" I guess? I myself am slightly torn between working for money to help out with the family and earn some bucks for the new clothes I'll have to get for the year long winter of Rochester (hehehehe!). Then I was considering going over Biochem (Lippencott's) since some of my med friends advised me to fresh up on everything I blocked out--*ahem*, forgot! Have you guys been contemplating about this summer too? :D

june 30 is going to be my last day of work. after that, i'm just going to hang around with my friends and family (maybe take a little road trip). oh yeah.....can't forget to take lots of NAPS!!!

This June I am taking going on a cruise to Greece for a week :) . For July 4th, I will hopefully be heading to Miami  . Early August I will likely head to Canada again for Caribana :D . Sometime between July and mid August, I will take a quick a family trip to Jamaica to visit my aunt's side of the family  . Oh yeah then I will quit my job after I am back from Jamaica.

I'm workin' until August. Gotta save up the cash for tuition and such.

I'm going to vegas right after my last exam, which is next week, then I'm gonna chill, and get ready for the move... oh yeah and maybe take on a tutoring job.

I should work, to earn much needed cash. But on the other hand, its kind of my last long stretch of time off in the forseeable future. I am free from May 1 to August 14. So I kind of want to something novel and exciting.

But how could you even contemplate boning up on the old bugs(biochem). Its summer! Do you remember the MCAT? How hard that was in summer?? Also, you have all of med school to stress out and study, take some time for yourself this summer.
Carpe Diem!!

I have been working for 4 years, so I kind of have forgotten what "summers" are at this point. Since I do live on my own I have to continue to pull my own weight until classes start, meaning I need a paying job of some sort. After much stressing over what to do until classes start here is my plan:

Tomorrow is my last day of work here in the lab... Yee haw!

I am basically going to be a bum for May... Lots of track events and races... going to Minnesota to visit my best friend from college who is ready to pop out a baby... sleep... work on my house...

Then for the 8 weeks before classes start I got a research fellowship at Umass. At first I thought the last thing I wanted to do before school was more research. But then I thought that a nice low-pressure clinical project with good hours and no nights and weekends could be a nice thing. Every other sort of job I was looking at had too much potential for night/weekend/ awful hours.

... sorry so long... Just have to make it through today and tomorrow and then I get a month of fun!!!!

Bee

I will sleep, chill out, sleep, party, sleep, go to Washington D.C., sleep, shop, sleep. Oh yeah, did I mention SLEEP?!! :p

guys

im leaving my research job at the end of june and relaxing until mid august. im gonna take a trip to see my best pal in charlotte. im gonna make a camping trip around new england. i cant wait to see maine. im gonna watch 2 hours of ER everyday, go to the gym, get a nice tan and run alot. im gonna eat lunch with my grandmother and swim with my cousins. im gonna drink beer with my buddies and love life.

i cant wait to get away from this job....research is not my thing. uggg.

I will be the director of a water-skiing program in canada this summer...I am so excited for the best of both worlds....making money and having a blast. Sun, tan, motorboats, and skiing 5 times a day...i do not know if i will want to start med school in august.

Bilateral bunion surgery while I'm stil on my parents' health insurance.

Nice to see everyone posting some fun things.

I'm heading to Saint Maarten for the last week of May. My activities there will largely consist of hammoking, drinking a wide variety of frozen beverages, swimming, napping, eating, and laying on the beach. Then, June and July will be about 40hours of lab/week finishing up my Master's Thesis. Weekends will be spent at the 'Jerzey Shore' and chilling with my rottweiler at my mother's house. Beginning of August my girlfriend and I are flying out to Cali to attend the wedding of some really good friends of ours (the groom's parents own an awesome restaurant in Mendocino. It is right on a cliff looking out at the Pacific). Open Bar, lots of friends we haven't seen in awhile. Return to NYC and relax with family for a couple/few weeks before making the move. As far as work goes, my ass is going to be in debt, period. I want to have as much fun this summer as possible.

Have fun.

I'm gonna work probably until mid-July, then all the fun of moving cross country sets in. Once I get to Ohio, I'll get all moved in, then probably spend a week or 2 with my mom and grandparents before starting school.

I'm gonna start studying for the boards. I figure 2 years and some months will be PLENTY of time to get everything down pat  OK for real, i'm gonna save up to buy a nice motorbike, work at wal-mart (3rd shift=major $$$$), and sleep the rest of the day. Luckily mom has stopped nagging me to do all my own stuff when i'm at home (laundry, etc) so i'll have the easy life! --Trek

I going to work, save, and pray that we can find a good job for my wife in Syracuse. If not then she and my little girl might stay in Texas while I'm bustin my ass in med school. Hopefully things will work out

I'll be spending part of my summer at OIS in Newport RI--not much of a choice.

Oh boy - I feel like I should be working like everyone else! I just want to make money without doing the work. Anywayzzzz I'll be finishing this research paper and leaving my lab in 2 weeks! Then onto a 3-week contract position with Kaplan. After that it's L.A to visit a friend then Honolulu to visit another - both in early June. The third week of June I'm hoping to be a counselor at a one-week camp for kids with asthma in NJ - then if accepted, I'll be in Southern Cali for another one-week contract position teaching a college prep course in early July. Then late July to the day before I move into the dorms/apts, I'll be in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios!!

I'll probably do a clinical research thing for 8 weeks and work as an EMT at night until the first week of August, then go to Europe and Turkey where some of my relatives live and spend 3 weeks on the beach!

My family is from Kingston, but I'm not heading there since it's pretty dangerous right now - especially since I'm travelling alone.

Working, Research, and going to Spain

I'm doing Lifeguard training and hoping all goes well, I'll be working on a sunny this summer  At some point, I'd like to do a backpacking trip through Europe... always wanted to go to Spain and Italy, it'll be the best place to practice my Spanish and Italian!

Michelys, are you going to Rochester for sure? It is currently one of my top choices out of my acceptances.

I'll be working until mid-july then heading to Costa Rica for 3 weeks! Rainforests, beaches, and exotic wildlife. :D After I get back, I'll have 3 weeks to move in, sleep and spend time with my family and friends.

Can I just say I'm so jealous of all of you who will be able to travel and relax this summer!! Unfortunately I'll be studying for the MCAT and working full time. If all goes well, hopefully I will be in your shoes next year. LIVE IT UP :D

I'm backpacking around Europe for 7 weeks with a friend. I'm not even sure where we'll be going. We're starting in Greece and ending up in London. Since my life seems to be planned out for the next decade, it'll be nice to embrace a little spontaneity.

Working at the pool in the sun with the kids at the job I love as a lifeguard/pool manager. Then in the beinning of August going to Cali with the fam for a week then school starts August 12th. Yipeee!! I wish summer would come now!!! It certainly feels like it's here in New Jersey at ~90 today!

I'm planning on taking a vacation from June 13-23. However, I am also on two waitlists. If a med school would call, would they leave a message, or do I physically need to be there?

Thanks.

travel all over China.

Golf all day. I intend to be one tanned goddess by the end of summer. Ahhhhhh, the joy of having absolutely no summer plans!

I'm just settling my plans. I'm going to work like a dog until June 21 but taking a few vacations here and there, down to Juneau and a 4-day float down the Yukon (Eagle to Circle). On June 21-22 I'll have my annual 24-hour solstice party to catch the last rays of the midnight sun before I leave Alaska for the next four years (jdub, SMW, WMN let me know if you need directions 'cause of course you're all invited).

After the party, I'm driving up to Inuvik, NWT, Canada, as the jumping off point for my big 10,000-mile road trip visiting long lost friends and relatives. Stops in Seattle, Portland, Berkeley, Salt Lake City, Denver & Golden, then up to Rochester, Minnesota to drop off my stuff.

From there, back up north and east to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Then south to Boston, Stamford, NYC, Raleigh, and a final stop in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Then turn around and back to Rochester, hopefully in time for orientation that starts July 29.

I figure my car will be dead by then (this will be the third 10,000+ mile road trip for her in the last 12 years). But all is well as Dad is giving me his old car as my folks have retired and don't need two cars.

Despite the fact that I'm leaning towards turning down my MD-only acceptance to apply again MD/PhD, I'm going to reply to this. :p

I'll be doing research all summer. :) I need the money, and I find it interesting. We have four months off from school, which is just too long to do nothing. And, I think I might go down to Chicago to visit a friend there... :)

I'm terminating my god awful lab job on June 7th. I'll be at my HS best friend's graduation June 13-14. Then, I'll be in NYC the following weekend for my boyfriend's birthday. My July plans are up in the air b/c my parents haven't told me if we're going to Europe as a family or if I'm on my own! In August, I'll be in Boston for my boyfriend's brother's wedding and then I'll be back in NYC for school! Woo hoo! I'm also going to do some PT baby-sitting for $8-12/hour for free. It's a wonderful life considering I just got back my $600 tax return!!!

mpp, sounds like an awesome plan and thanks for the solstice invite :D , but I'm afraid I'm going to be convalescing from my bilateral bunion surgery

Wow, definetly doing something mindless and stressless. After spending a whole summer MCAT studying and then another in the lab, I am in need of some FUN!!! Besides, hasn't everyone had enough of watching all your non-premed friends spend summers shopping and partying. It's time we all joined the PART-TAY!!!
In need of some serious chill-axing.

Have any of you guys heard of working for Vector (www.workforstudents.com)? Supposedly it's $18.25 an hour plus commission. They called today to offer me an interview....if this is a telemarketig type thing (although I think it's in person w/ clients), would you take the job? I am only on vacation from May 26th (graduation) until July 22 (orientation). Or if you were me would you just relax?

If I work, I think it'll only be 10 hours a week plus a little volunteering in a clinic to keep up my Spanish skills. Does this sound like too much? I wanna be fresh for med school.

Hey Dra. Foxy! That's sounds like good money to me! I was thinking of taking on a small job too so I could buy my own clothes and stuff for the Virtual Blizzard at Rochester. But if you don't really need the money I'd rather relax and hang out with your family. You're brother is TRE ADORABLE :) and you start orientation so early and all. That time is invaluable! It's up to you girl! Good luck!

I think I'm going to give myself a mohawk.

Dude I'm all about mohawks.

I'll be working at Brown this summer with high school kids--making a little cash and hopefully making a difference!

Ok, scratch that last idea I had. Michelys is right, my little brother IS adorable and mpp is right, selling steak knives sucks! I'm gonna hang out by the pool in sunny Florida with my family and volunteer once a week at the clinic, workout everyday, and do lots of shopping to buy stuff for med school. For money I'll babysit a few times and maybe sub an aerobics class, but that's it! :D

Don't tell anyone in that controversial Anatomy b4 med school allo thread, but I'm gonna but that video set of anatomy to get a little taste of what's to come.... :)

Since moving closer to UCSF i got 5 parking tickets (the max, then they tow/boot you). I am broke, so I am going to volunteer instead (they give you this option) to pay it off. What a nice EC... :D :D

sounds like it's time to get a bike. isn't the traffic in the city terrible?

Last working day: May 31st; HOWEVER, contemplating quitting earlier than planned.

May 22-28: Redwood National Park camp/hike roadtrip

June: entire month treking Vietnam (north to south) with 35lbs of photo equipment, travel writing, etc.

July: find housing whereever I end up finally, chill, and prepare to move

August: Medical School begins! Let's rock!! la la

Fast forward four years...blah blah..more interviews and what not. Doesn't this process ever end???

backpacking on the appalachian trail...60 days, 600 miles. woo hoo!

I will be working in an entomology lab ~40 hrs. a week, and I will also be working 5 hours one day a week at a golf course (and off the clock utilizing the free green fees, snacks, and demo clubs, of course). Hopefully, there will be time in between to hang out with my friends and relax before life gets really crazy in August. Trek--What kind of motorcycle are you getting? I am thinking about buying a Ninja ZX6R in the near future.

Graduate MS (May 4); ~2 weeks later Alberta & Montreal Canada; England; France; Italy; Netherlands; Spain (if ca$h remains); Miami (4th of July weekend); then get housing ready for school.
