What are your thoughts on Holistic Dentistry? I’m an undergrad student and came across some interesting articles on Holistic Dentistry. I just talked with one of my professor and he agreed to supervise me in doing a special study on Holistic Dentistry. I’m really excited and want to know your thoughts on the topic.

Sounds very interesting, I know of preventive dentistry. The dean of Arizona is big on that, he had a practive where he did that.

If you can email me the artcicle, or the link to it, I would love to read it. It sounds very interesting.

I never even heard of holistic dentistry until taking holistic health classes. It's very interesting. I supervised preventive dentistry for a year and it was never brought up at conferences or from incoming hygienist....i'll have to get the article from my documents..

There are 2 reasons a dentist turns to holistic dentistry:

1. It makes the dentist feel special and important that he is one of a select few who know "the truth".

2. It is an easy way to scam ignorant people out of a lot of money.

Unfortunately, I think reason #2 is by far the most common.

BTW, preventive dentistry is nothing new. It involves telling patients to brush, floss, and get regular cleanings. Not exactly ground-breaking stuff.

Holistic dentistry, also referred to as biologic dentistry, is an alternative approach that focuses on the use of non-toxic restorative materials for dental work, and emphasizes the unrecognized impact that dental toxins and dental infections may have on a person's overall health. While traditional dentistry focuses only on the areas above the neck, holistic dentistry looks at the patient as a whole system and how the mouth relates to the rest of the body.
