Let me preface my comments by saying that almost all medical schools are great institutions that will help you become the kind of doctor that you want to be. With that in mind, there were a lot of things that personally turned me off about NYMC (as well as many of the other applicants that I was interviewing with). The first two years you will be in class about 8 hrs/day. The students there looked far, far more tired and burned-out than any other school that I visited (but they all said that they were happy - they just didn't look like it). One reason they do so well on the boards is because thet use mini-boards (practice exams) as their regular course exams; this can artificially inflate their board exams scores. The school doesn't own its own hospital, which I don't like (but neither does Harvard). The setting is neither rural, nor urban, and the rent is extremely expensive. However, they did have affordable campus housing for singles and families. They did have a great Anatomy lab, but it made me nervous that it seemed to be their biggest and best selling point (when it comes down to it, a lab is a lab). They seemed to interview a lot of people, so that may be a good reason to apply. Good luck in your application.
