I'm thinking about applying there. Can some tell me more about the school? Its reputation, curriculum, etc?? Any info is appreciated.

Since your a fellow Passions Fan I will tell you what I think.

Right now I'm going to NYMC next year. I think it is a great school, dedicated professors, fantastic anatomy lab. Probably one of the best in the country.

Great primary care program and consistent high board scores (which means a better chance of good residency) West Chester hospital is associated with it. Great for rotations.

It is expensive though. However I have heard that they give a decent amount of financial aid. I haven't filed through them so I haven't eceived my package yet.
Where did you go to undergrad?

Good Luck

Hey JulianCrane:

You aren't accepting PM's

So I hope you read this

Hi there,

I have both New Books and Used books. You are one of two people that is looking into buying the books. After reviewing the list of materials, please submit what you think would be a fair price. Princeton review says all their retail for $250. As you will see I did use some of the new books a little bit (just a couple of passages) Some take into account all the materials, tests, and books, and extra Kaplan stuff. You can buy just some of the materials but I would rather sell the entire bundle. If the other person wants the entire bundle I will probably sell to that individual.

Let me tell you what I have

All New Princeton Review Books (Verbal and science review only a couple of passages done)
Those books include:

Tests A-D (a difficult set of tests w/ ans)
Science Review ( everything you need for the Phy Sci sect and Biology Sect)
Science workbook (Book of 100 passages that cover every topic)
Verbal Book- Passages and In- Class Compendium

If you are know Kaplan they test a little different. They test with topic tests. I have many of those.

Plus I have a Flowers and Silver Book (2 whole test book w/ans)

AAMC offical Test IV and V (I can't remember if they come with explanations I don't think they do.

I'm not trying to make money I want to give you guys a fair price for all the materials

Have a great day

What does everyone think of this school's location?

Last weekend, I was driving back from a Sox-Yankees game (go Boston!) and passed through Valhalla. It seemed like on the one hand, it's nice that it's close to NYC. On the other hand, it really didn't *feel* close to NYC. Are students trapped in suburbia for 4 years? Would someone be able to survive there without a car?

Actually I live about 10 minutes south from NYMC. I moved up here from the Bronx and I love it. I work in the city now, and it is an easy commute. At most NYMC is 30 minutes from Manhattan. The area around NYMC is really nice, and the access to the city is great. You will have no problem getting to anf from the city. As for the Sox enjoy your time in 1st place because come July that belongs to Da' Bronx Bombers. GO Yanks. (Red Sox always find a way to blow it) <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

If you don't have a car, you might feel trapped in Valhalla. However, you also have White Plains to fall back on. Though it is definitely NOT NYC, White Plains does offer you things to do when time permits (I personally recommend The Westchester-an upscale mall in the area, although if you are paying NYMC tuition, you might not want to frequent there too often!)

A note on NYMC--my friend's brother just graduated from there and got his #1 choice residency in sports medicine at Michigan--he is thrilled.

Best of luck!

Let me preface my comments by saying that almost all medical schools are great institutions that will help you become the kind of doctor that you want to be. With that in mind, there were a lot of things that personally turned me off about NYMC (as well as many of the other applicants that I was interviewing with). The first two years you will be in class about 8 hrs/day. The students there looked far, far more tired and burned-out than any other school that I visited (but they all said that they were happy - they just didn't look like it). One reason they do so well on the boards is because thet use mini-boards (practice exams) as their regular course exams; this can artificially inflate their board exams scores. The school doesn't own its own hospital, which I don't like (but neither does Harvard). The setting is neither rural, nor urban, and the rent is extremely expensive. However, they did have affordable campus housing for singles and families. They did have a great Anatomy lab, but it made me nervous that it seemed to be their biggest and best selling point (when it comes down to it, a lab is a lab). They seemed to interview a lot of people, so that may be a good reason to apply. Good luck in your application.

I'm finishing first year at NYMC, and C3PO, you have no idea what you are talking about. Probably around 2-3 of the 5 days a week we are done at 12. The other days we are done around 2 or 3. I have no idea where you dreamt up the concept that we go to school 8 hours a day. Get your facts straight next time.

I'm sorry, I interviewed about six months ago and that's what I thought the students told me. They did seem very tired, even though they did not appear to be displeased with the school. The student I stayed with said he was at school either studying or in class about 12+ hours/day (I just remember that he took both a lunch and a dinner to school and he even had a family at home). I'm sure it's a great school and you learn the material well.

A cool school. Excellent hospital affiliates--heck, how can you beat St. Vincents? Campus is beautiful, and a short drive from the Bronx. I drove up from Manhattan and was there in no time (of course the Manhattan traffic was ruthless but I've had enough experience on Houston highways to hold my own). The director of admissions is pleasant and attentive.

Didn't really get a chance to talk to students but my student interviewer was fairly friendly. My faculty interviewer--Dr Wasserman in Microbiology--was a pure pleasure to talk with.

One of the major drawbacks of any private medical school in the NE--NYMC included--is cost of attendance. I liked NYMC a lot and it isn't an exaggeration to say I love MCP Hahnemann (for various reasons), but because of the very high tuition I'll very likely settle for my state school.

All in all, NYMC is an excellent school. Make sure you apply there.

I, too, was excited about applying to NYMC, because it sounded like and interesting school with a unique opportunity to have class in suburbia but still have the third and fourth year rotation experiences in New York. However, they failed to even offer me an interview. It was the only school I didn't get an interview from, which was weird because in terms of ratings, it was by far the lowest ranked school I applied to. My stats well exceeded their averages. Not sure exactly what they are looking for, but I definitely wasn't it! Just wanted to share my experience, and remind you to keep your mind open on other schools too!

blazed,

thanks for the info about the area. it makes me feel more comfortable about valhalla. i guess i just kinda got freaked out by the fact that we were driving up saw mill pkwy, and got off at just about every exit and *could not* find a gas station. i felt like i was in the boonies!
as for the yankees, all i know is that it was a beautiful thing to see so many sox fans at yankees stadium last sunday, screaming and cheering, while the yankees fans could only hang their heads in shame.

banannie,

You got us this weekend, but Yankee fans know one thing divisions are not won in June, they are won in August. This is when we will gladly take 1st place over and win champioship # 27. I would like to go and see a game at Fenway. Probably the next time the Yanks come out there. Are you going to NYMC?

THought I reply to your ?. I'm from white plains which is a great city. Westchester is a great place with alot to offer, you get advantage of been away from crowded NYC plus just having about a 30 min drive if you want to visit it. If you don't have car.....don't need one, trains run 24/7. I'm in the Air Force and currently stationed in Nebraska and I will apply to NYMC in about two years.

GO YANKEES

Hey Wander:

What is the Air Force like?
Because I was interested in joining if I don't get any scholarship money from NYMC.

NYMC is just so darn expensive.

Wander:
I second that, most of the people in Westchester work in the city. Many people live in Westchester to get away from the crowded city, and at the same time they have the conveience of being close to city. Best of both worlds. I for one love Manhattan, but I would not want to live there.
