My grandmother always told me to find a job I would love to do without pay, and I'd be relatively happy.

What career (if any at all) would you choose assuming that you never had to work a day in your life to support a great lifestyle?

I make less than 250% of the federal poverty level right now and am perfectly happy. don't need a "great" lifestyle. however, if I could choose anything and wouldn't have educational loans to repay... I'd still want to be an ob/gyn, I'd still want open a birthing center, I'd still want to do homebirths, and I'd still want to serve the underserved. only difference? I could actually afford the med mal to do it.

I would do whatever Paris Hilton's job is. Apparently she is retiring in three years. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

ditto. my family would be considered pretty well off, but id very much prefer earning than leeching. and i need to be constantly stimulated; the thought of being half as motivated and educated as i am right now because i'm rich is pretty depressing.
and to be able to practice medicine without worrying every second that a little malpractice slip could totally end my career/life? that would be quite awesome.

id go to walmart which is 2 hrs from my house..daily
and ride their bikes in the aisles
id also dedicate my each day to loving a certain someone.... and calling back telemarketers

I'll still want to be a doctor, BUT I probably just work half the time

i know i mean how many ppl can say they are going to walk from alaska to siberia. Now if only we could work on this 10 year time commitment...

i'd write a lot, travel, and do a heap load of non-profit, 'creative' work.
and probably do teach for america for 2 years.
our educational system needs a lot of work.....

nothing. I would travel and go backpacking.

Only a conservative would post something that vulgar just after criticizing others for vulgarity

I would be an artist. I would paint on the side of the road in California and hope someone wanted to buy my art.
I'd spend the rest of my time making fashionable shirts out of T-shirts. Maybe I would go to interior design school or something. I’d probably end up wanting to be a doctor about 10 years down the line after I got married, had kids, and pissed away some of my life doing the things I stated above. Mmm artistic for own sake, sounds great.

I'd be a pianist, and go around and play for everyone!

I think I'd be a teacher, and write in my spare time.

And travel a lot.

dance artiste. :)

Yeah, I would travel a lot as well. And read. Not that either of those are careers. Maybe be a book reviewer. :D

I'd definitely be a steamfitter for a while, then make a career out of following dream theater or pain of salvation tours.

I would become Governor of the state of California. Then if I got bored with that then I would run for president for the democratic party, I couldn't do much worse. :)

I would be a National Geographic photographer :D

why did a cold shiver just go up my back?

if i didnt have to work in my life, i wouldnt! i would probably read books for pleasure. i might attend various courses at various universities, without ever enrolling in them... i would most certainly travel a lot!

Umm food-tate tester, car test driver, be the host of 5th gear or top gear, be "inspector no. 5"

If it were possible, I'd part-time between being a doc, a buyer (preferably for Saks), a food critic, and a linguist. And one week a month, I would travel to a foreign country - preferably some place that speaks the language of the month I'm learning! ^_^

I would be a dead-head except not for the dead. I would religiouosly follow the Yankees everywhere. So I guess I would be a Yank-head? Plus I'd start a Microbrewery. I'd get really fat too.

maybe one of those sports analyst on Around The Horn or something. or writing for an international foreign policy magazine. wait does this mean I shouldn't be a doctor?

I would be a doctor - charity work back home, writer, food critic, chef, makeup artist, entrepeneur (makeup & skincare line & bakery), personal trainer, and of course I'd travel a lot. Oh yeah, how could I forget!? -- I'd also be superwoman and have a fabulous husband and perfect children. That was fun.

Man, isn't Rachel Ray's job awesome!? Well, the $40 a day part, at least... travel the world, eat at local favorites, and then talk about it on a show.

I'd probably buy a sports franchise and try to emulate Mark Cuban or the Maloof brothers.

Interesting replies. Does that mean many of you who didn't say "doctor" are doing it for the money?

I think I would still attempt to be a doctor (simply because of my condition). Or at least find a way to get the medication myself and treat people with similar immune conditions.

I just wish I realized this sooner. I think I'm getting too old now and my memory's fading. :(

An exotic car test driver would also be fun for a hobby. :)

I think if I was rich, I wouldn't start on the Med journey investing 4 yrs college 4 yrs med and 4 yrs residency just to practice on the side. I would definitely do something medicine related maybe like hospital management or do a biotech startup. 12 yrs is alot of time to invest just so you can practice in a free clinic 3 days a week.

If I was already almost there, I would definitely finish out.

I would have this guys job... http://www.earthtrekuk.net/index.html

Walking around the world is just an awesome idea....
Interesting job/idea. But they said it's nonstop. So this entry is a bit confusing:

Karl flew back to Fairbanks and after sorting out and storing his equipment has flown back to Colombia to be with Catty for a while.

Anyone care to elaborate? How can he "fly" back somewhere if the trip is "nonstop"?

Be the guy doing this for a living... thrashing around top end cars and talking about them for 30mins each week on TV:

Isn't that the "Stig"? Yeah, sweet job. Can't even begin to imagine how many awesome cars he's driven.

its nonstop because he will go back to the same exact spot he was before and continue walking... its supposed to be a nonstop line of foot prints from the tip of south ameria to his home in Hull in the united kingdom...

first i'd invest in a huge library, like in beauty and the beast. it'd be one of those libraries that has a ladder on wheels, and possibly another floor that you get to via a spiral staircase (i think i'm channeling indiana jones, last crusade). then i think i'd go da vinci style and learn about anything and everything that interests me, and then try to figure out new theories and invent things. i'd really just want to try out every occupation there is out there, from day care sitter to oil rig technician to world-class musician to congressman to yes, doctor to anything else you guys can think of. this of course would necessitate traveling all over the world and meeting people of all sorts of cultures. and i would want to learn the language of that area as well while i'm there.

i'd also go surfing. see earth from space. i think i like what my mentor does, working in her clinic a few days a week while also directing all sorts of research. though it'd be nice to be more involved with the intellectual and the hands-on side of the research rather than the grant-writing side of things.

but really, i think my biggest goal is to be my son's baseball coach. which is the biggest thing about medicine...will i ever get that chance?

this is interesting....there's just so many different things that you can do with your life, and so many different ways you can lead your life, and you only get the one shot. you want to meet lots of people, but you also want meaningful relationships. these take time and mean you don't get to know as many people. s'all about balance in life, and with that i'm going to end this ramble and hit the sack. sweet dreams, all...

I would create a pool of coinage to swim in ala Scrooge Mcduck. Make it a sport. Be the only person to be able to train in it and win an olympic medal.

LOL perfect but i also like Zong's idea of a library too, maybe i could make a balconey that goes from the library over the pool of money...

O and Brett i am happy to see that you have taken one more step up the stairway to heaven....

oh man beauty and the beast! i would just go all out and build a castle, XANADU like, replete with a beautiful ballroom in which to conduct regal and perhaps even romantic get togethers

Disney-Beauty+Beast-Destiny.jpg

library? hmm it would be so stinky, and susceptible to burning up. maybe if you build it as a separate entity, and charge people to use it

ive noticed this is a recurring SDN theme actually, it must really be the ideal of future docs

I would open a free clinic after getting my MD. I think that would be fun. "Don't have good insurance/any insurance/state aid sucks? DAMN THE MAN, come see me!"

I would want to be a travelling musician, who drives from city to city doing a gig and then doing over and over and over again...

I wish she would retire now and spare us all from having to listen to any more inane "that's hot" sayings.

I'd still become a doctor, but I'd dedicate a lot of my time to helping those who can't afford medical care. :D

I would be the world's greatest living philanthropist. I would open up free clinics, lobby for universal health care in the US, fund medical research for HIV, malaria, etc., run for President, and work to restore the US' image in the world.

I'm open to possibilities with unlimited funds and loads of time

If I were rich, I'd be doing all the same things I'm doing now, except I'd be rich and doing them. And I'd still want to be a doctor.

Same here......

I personally feel that wealth acquired by your sweating your own sweat and working your way to the top are the most respectable type of wealth because you'll learn to appreciate money more when you've had to work your own way to the top.

If I were filthy rich and had no job, I'd be bored as hell whole day long. I would still want to have a job such as an MD or DO because it would give me a constant challenge.

Furthermore, I come from a society where the value of education is real important and so to me it would still be important to be well educated rather then ignorant of other issues.

Also, I'd want to be in a position where I am with people of different backgrounds.

But at the end of the day.......

Let us all remember that even the wealthy have their fair share of problems. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing at all, is free in life. Remember that much if nothing else.
