how strict are med schools about the 6 credits of english requirement. at my school i was given AP credit for one of the english classes and only had to take 1 class. so i really only have 3 credits. i just graduated from college and im gettin my master's in medical sciences at bu. does this mean ill have to take an english class or can i just use AP

Usually they are pretty steadfast. Unless they see that you took an extended humanities series. Most schools say that they will accept AP credits only in the place of Science courses, with the expectation that you will be taking more advanced courses in the areas that you tested out of. Some medical schools do not accept AP credit for any of the required prerequisites; an example of this is most of the UC schools.

As for your situation. I wouldn't worry about explaining it in your primary application, but when the individual schools start sending you secondaries, make sure to mention that you have accomplished some sort of writing composition in some of your other classes. It's funny how I too was pushed to take AP courses while in high school, yet I ended up having to retake the courses in college anyways to meet the requirements of the UC schools.

A safe bet is to call the schools your interested in, and explain your situation. I'm sure you'll have a sympathetic ear that will listen to your dillemma [sp?].

Good luck in the application process. 🙂

I e-mailed several med schools and all but 2 would accept a foreign language literature course as a substitute. I ended up taking a second English class so it really didn't matter for me in the end though.

Will schools accept a commitment to take an English requirement (or math) in the spring, as long as it is done at the time of matriculation?

schools i talked to would not accept AP credits for english requirements but would allow you to be taking the class as long as it was successfully passed before acceptance.

well i just now called upstate and they said they will accept the ap credit as long as its on my transcript. however im guessin ill have to call the rest of the 25 some odd schools im applying to and find out what they say.

however i did look through my courses and there is a class i took that required significant writing and was used as a technical writing class..do you think i could use that for my other english class. it was a 4 credit class

i think some med schools will let you substitute an english class with another class only if there was extensive expository writing in that course.

especially if it was a class with extensive reading or writing...i know i could have gotten credit at some schools if i had taken a foreign language reading/writing class (not that i did.)
