What interests do guys have outside of work? What makes you you? Post a photo if you dare.

I’ll start. My main passion is mountain biking. I’ve been riding for about 34 years now. I also like hiking and photography. During winter I enjoy skiing and snowboarding.

I used to run marathons before residency… now that life is more settled I’m trying to get back into it, but I just had a baby and let’s just say my body will never be the same 🫠

Otherwise I like to paint and make things for around the house. We have a 3D printer, so that’s fun

Awesome! There's a lot of satisfaction in making. I haven't painted since high school but I remember enjoying it.

Wait, people like podiatry? (Just kidding)
Definitely enjoy lifting weights, jogging. Would love to play pick up sports if I had time and salt water fishing. Hiking is ok. I’m sure I would be in to a lot more things if I had free time. Probably would read about history and theoretical physics. Listen to music.

Excellent! I’ve only tried saltwater fishing once. Didn’t catch a thing! I hit the gym semi-regularly but I guess I’ve never thought of it as a hobby. I like it well enough though.

I enjoy shooting pieces of paper. And metal. And some animals (to eat, for the overly sensitive SDN members). I’d like to backpack more but the youngest needs to be a few years older before we can all go. I have been an amateur meat smoker for 3 years now. I’m starting to wake surf and I’ve been an avid skier in the winters. Since natch did a photo dump, I will too. Cheers.

Good topic... we do mostly hikes, trails, camp trips, gym, big parties or concerts or events sometimes, usually just have ppl over for games and relax. I do motorcycle, football and FFB, stuff like that. Girlfriend likes cooking, gardening.
Gonna do some backyard fire + camping tonight... out of town lake camping next weekend for the holiday.

Pretty sick! I used to have a B8 S4 with slightly modded suspension bits (to make it handle more neutral instead of understeering like mad). I rarely got to cut it loose since the highest speed limit around here is 45mph. I'm driving a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee now, which works well for all of the bike/camping trips that I go on. It's not super sporty though.

The B8 S4 is a damn nice car. I am currently in an RS3.

Raptors are tons of fun. I don’t know if I could ever transition back to a non-performance variant.

I like to invest my money in stocks and crypto. I consider myself an average trader but I’ve been able to pay off a condo in Southern California due to my trading history. So I’m not terrible. Once I do make a significant profit I am going to invest in farmland primarily. Anything I can do to alleviate the financial need to continue to be a podiatrist is what I’m trying to achieve. I really don’t enjoy this profession at all and I hate the culture of this profession.

Other than investing I like to spend time with my wife and two young kids. Trying to be the best dad I can be.

Ever since I left my last hospital job and started my new hospital gig I’ve regained a little balance and have resumed exercising which was something I really loved doing before and during podiatry school. I slowed up in residency and when I became an attending I let my professional career consume everything. Then COVID happened and I did nothing for two years.

I currently walk 2 hours a day in sunny Southern California everyday.

I enjoy gravel cycling, and road cycling with my gravel bike. Haven't gotten into mountain biking because I enjoy having intact clavicles😂

Playing video games and board games with my kids

Also big into music, and I front a rock band (lead singer, rhythm guitar player)...rock from the 80's, 90's, 2000's mostly, and whatever crazy requests...the wife enjoys the extra cash I make doing that, so she let's me stay out late at restaurants/ bars...I just get home and put the cash in her outstretched hand while she's sleeping lol

Gym . Got into dead lifting more, was learning power cleans then knees started hurting....treadmill, weights etc. Got into boxing for a little bit as well.

Car stuff. Meets, tinkering on the car here and there. Its due for new tires. Also looking to regrease the shifter. Don't have a high enough income/time mod it for autoX etc yet.

Shooting. Mostly 9mm handguns at the range. Wife is against having a loaded gun in the house with a kid on the way. Ammo is expensive at the range. Still like to go every 2-3 months.

PC games.

Whatever the wife wants to do on weekends.

This will probably all get thrown out the window once the new offspring gets here.

Ammo is expensive at the range.

Ammo is expensive everywhere.

So you rent from the range and then I’m assuming they make you buy their ammo when using their gun like every other range? What all have you been able to shoot? What have you been best with?

They charged market price for 9mm Winchester target rounds.
Shot at 20, 30, 40yds on iron sights with both eyes open.

Tried Glock 17, Sig Suaer M18, Walther PDP.

Glock build quality felt solid but ergonomics felt too skinny in my hand. Stock grip kept sliding around. Slide was hard to grip when chambering a round. Trigger felt squishy- harder to gauge when it'd hit the wall compared to the other 2. I liked the iron sites on this one the most.

Sig bore axis is highest out of all of them but it looks the coolest in my opinion. Slide cuts and slide feel very nice when rounding one in the chamber. Easy to get sights on target but stock sites it has big burly shoulders that block out a lot of the target- didn't like that as much. Trigger is OK, long travel until you hit the wall. Its a beefy burly gun and I like how manly it is.

Walther PDP shot the most accurate with. The actual sites I didn't like as much- harder to see when they're white plastic vs the Sig. Trigger feel and weight is exceptional. Slide cuts and slide is exceptional. Shot one with a red dot but it kept jamming. Next time I went back they had a new one with just iron sights.

Hard to say between Sig M18 or PDP. Currently would lean towards owning the PDP.

Heard good things about the Canuk TP9 and S&W Shield but havn't tried those yet.

Good, good. We must take care of our health. Enjoy those kids! I’m about three weeks away from having an empty nest. Last evening my daughter asked to go picnic at this one mountain lake where we always went when she was a little kid. It was grand.

Yeah the brisket breakfast sandwich was a major victory. Did the hot honey sriracha smoked salmon bites in the first picture not do it for you? Those were also 🔥
Are you kidding? Those salmon bites look amazing! I could almost taste the photo!

I just started a writing class. I’m hoping to have a first draft of a novel by the end of the year. I suck at writing so we will see if it actually happens.

Very cool! What a great creative outlet. I’m terrible at writing. One of my high school classmates is a professional writer and it’s pretty neat being able to buy her books.

Yeah really. Better enjoy those hobbies as much as you can while you can. Kids are a massive time, energy, and money suck but they can also be super rewarding. Hopefully you’ll be able to make time for your personal interests too. I think it’s important both for your own sake and also to show your kid(s) that you have a life outside of them. Congratulations on being an expectant father!

That’s awesome! I don’t know any professional writers.

I am a terrible writer too. The course is good so far. I’m basically reviewing the story structure of a novel. Hope to start the writing part end of September/beginning of October. Looking to scratch write a novel of my bucket list. 🤣

I hike whenever I can with my dog. I also golf once a month but I am terrible at it. I am really loving the golf culture of drinking and smoking cigars though. Two kids and work pretty much consumes all the time. But I've spent a lot of time this year taking trips with wife and kids and plan on traveling at least once a month somewhere with family.

Travel is awesome, especially international. Stepping away from one’s home environment is a great way to keep perspective. Somehow your problems that seem so monumental at home become minor or even irrelevant (at least for a little while).

I was going to be sarcastic and say I like to knit and collect daffodils, but I couldn’t do that to NatCh.

I’m an exercise fanatic and knee surgery took me off the soccer field. So I road/gavel bike about 6-7 times a week at 6:15 am. After work I go to the gym daily for weight training.

I’m an avid fan of quality automobiles and enjoy my cars. I’m also amazed by the mechanical miracles that are called watches. Of course they have to be quality mechanical watches. The engineering inside those watches is incredible and is true artistry. So I’m a watch collector, which is becoming a VERY expensive habit.

The trick is that prior to purchasing a new watch I randomly buy my wife a nice piece of jewelry. Then a few weeks later I come home with a watch for me. Kind of defuses the bomb a little.

I’m also a lawn guy and like to work on my lawn to assure it’s the nicest on the block. I’m too ADD to sit inside and do anything, so I’m always outside and on the move.

And one other hobby is removing lots of sinus tarsi implants that a local shmohawk puts in a few months before. I love this guy……he’s paid for a few of my watches.

Sweet! I appreciate a nice yard. I'm actually in the process of removing my grass (our desert environment was never meant to support it like some parts of the country -- yours I'm guessing) and am going with a Xeriscape yard. We're putting in a second patio out back with a path and decorative bridge that will cross a faux streambed. I asked my daughter to design it and she made a rough sketch that we gave to the landscaper. Now she's looking into what landscape archtitecture is all about. Sweet!

I used to have a Rolex GMT Master II that disappeared somewhere. It was my one piece of bling and I loved how the second hand had that rapidfire staccato movement. I think it got stolen but I'm not sure. I should've filed a homeowners insurance claim but too much time has passed.

I've been trying my hand at gardening lately. I'm going to keep my backyard grass cause my kids play there and its very shaded, but otherwise I'm giving up on the rest of the grass. Native plants only. Watching non-natives die in 115 degree heat while natives flower is fairly convincing.

You had a Rolex GMT and don’t know what happened to it? Must be the phenol fumes. Rolex are super hot right now and going for outrageous prices. Authorized dealers are not allow to sell them for above retail. But they won’t sell you a watch unless you’re a super customer. They control the market and it’s crazy.

I’ve been on a waiting list for a Daytona for a few years. And for anyone who has nice watches, it’s mandatory to insure them. Companies like jewelers mutual are excellent and very low cost.

I’m not sure of homeowners would even cover it. And if you do have any Rolex get them appraised for replacement value. The prices have skyrocketed.

+1 for jewelers mutual insurance. Way better and more comprehensive than your standard homeowners or renters insurance.

Yeah, it was awhile before I even realized that it was missing since I didn’t wear it every day. 🙁

I've gone through a few Rolex's, but with crime these days I try not to wear anything that attracts attention. My current one just sits in my watch winder, gathering dust.

My insurance company would not cover the watch under homeowners. I had to have a seperated personal property policy.
