How can you seriously begin to call them a racist institution? if you are doing so just because they admit a high minority population then you need to step back and look at the big picture. they are a private, black university founded on the principle of giving opportunities to underrepresented portions of our society. in no way does that make them racist.JohnUNLV said:I know nothing about the dental program. However, in my opinion, howard university is a racist institution which should be forced to have equal admissions policies like every other school. Reverse racist institutions like this one just perpetuate the never ending cycle.

If there was an all white private school which admitted 95% whites only and openly discriminated against any and all minorities would you feel the same way? I think not.gdent15 said:How can you seriously begin to call them a racist institution? if you are doing so just because they admit a high minority population then you need to step back and look at the big picture. they are a private, black university founded on the principle of giving opportunities to underrepresented portions of our society. in no way does that make them racist.

I am against any and all forms of racism and regardless of who started this school or why they started it (which were both very racist reasons), this school continues to discriminate based on race, which is pretty much the definition of racism.
I'm not against giving under-represented portions of our society an EQUAL chance. Everyone should have an equal chance at every opportunity. Equal being the key word here. What this school does and what every racist institution does is give certain people a better chance, if thats not racist, then nothing is.
racism = a belief that some races are by nature superior to others; also: discimination based on such belief. I believe someone posted the stats and they accepted only 4 whites!PanchoVilla said:Im white and just got accepted to Howard today. based on its definition, Howard's way of admitting people is in no way racist. If they didn't admit more whites because they thought that whites were inherently inferior then that would be what you call a racist institution. There is nothing wrong for them to give a preference towards blacks and this is perfectly legal. it would be hard for me to convince you of that over a forum, so if you open minding i suggest that you go to any civil rights web site and read up on all the reasons why it is unfair to underprivileged applicants for every university to admit people based solely on their academic achievements.
Brilliant response. Thank you.PDizzle said:My only comment is one of common sense. To give preference to one race means by definition you select against the others. In this respect, Howard, by adding weight to the applicant based on their race means that applicants that do not have the desired race are at a disadvantage.
When you prefer a particular trait, you unavoidably do not prefer the non-trait. If you want applicants with a DAT of 20 or higher then you don't want applicants with a DAT of 19 or lower. If you want applicants to be 6 feet or taller then that means, by definition, you dont want applicants 5'11'' or shorter.
You can not give preference without taking it away from somewhere else. (kinda like the matter is not created or destroyed type of thing).
Now, is it right for Howard and other institutiuons to do this? That's up to debate and you guys can go on about that until you are blue in the face but you shouldn't kid yoursleves about it. Decisions are being made on race. Call it what you want.

Yes, for many years blacks (and all minorities for that matter) were discriminated against, and that is a horrible thing. But why would you want to wish that same treatment back on other innocent people? We had nothing to do with the treatment of your people, so why punish us? Also, thats why Martin Luther King Jr. fought for EQUAL rights not SPECIAL rights. The Civil Rights movement was for everyone to be treated equally, not to make up for previous mistakes. Discrimination is discrimination... you dont like it when its done to you, but you are all for it if it benefits you, thats horse****. I like to think that it is a pretty level playing field now compared to 100, or even 40 years ago. Yes, there are still problems, but they are being fixed. They are not being fixed by crying and complaining and looking for a handout though. Problems are fixed by ACTION, like getting better grades and getting better DAT scores, do that and you wont have to worry about being "discriminated against."ElDentistFuturo said:Yes. The decisions are based on race, and rightfully so. Do you not think that for many years, before and after civil rights, that whites were given an unfair advantage in admission to dental school? I dont get it, look at the numbers at your own school. These ratios are a direct cause of the discrimination that was practice during that time, and the not so recent past. To this day, even with several schools that "cater" to blacks applicant, our numbers are minute in the relm of practicing GPs.

Affirmative action is an attempt to level the playing field because of the subtle inequities black students face in life simply by being black. To use PDizzle's words, they are 'selected against' on a regular basis in society. It's probably just not noticeable to most non-black people because they never feel it.

PDizzle said:Exactly what inequities are you referring to? Think about what it takes to get into dental school:
Good grades
Good DAT score
Good letters of Rec
Volunteer time
Shadowing experience
Good personality and people skills
Exactly how does being black make those things harder to do then anyone else? This is an honest question and I would like an answer to it. Notice how I didn't say being poor, I said being black.
I totally agree with JohnUNLV on this one. I do not believe in basing anything on race. If our goal is to have a society blind to race then affirmative action is not a solution but instead it's keeping it alive. Race shouldn't even be on the dental application!

ElDentistFuturo said:At work so I'll try to make a few points pertaining your question:
As a whole a black highschool student have a higher chance of going to a low performing highschool than a white student. Most white peoples' immediate response is that they know plenty of white students that went to lower performing schools, so let me try to say it in a different way. Whites have a more likely chance of being enrolled at a high performing, or high quality, school. Take a look at the enrollment at prep schools and high performing public schools. These are usually all white environments, that few blacks ever have a chance to participate in. For example, analyze New Orleans, specifically the ninth ward. Most of those people are black and have lived in that "ghetto" for many generations. Whites as a whole never have to go through these kind of situations, so the odds are stacked against the black applicant. These people do not have the means to move so that their child gets an proper education, equivalent to the ones that most whites applicants receive. If they somehow get into college, they soon find out that their high school poorly prepared them for the college courses that they must now take. Thereby causing lower grades, leading to lower DAT scores, a vicious cycle.
Now about shadowing experience. As an white applicant, more so a white male applicant, you are reminded everyday that you can succeed at becoming a dentist, whether it is by watching T.V and catching a dental product advertisement with a white dentist in the background, or going to your yearly check up and seeing your favorite white dentist. Blacks, on the other hand, do not get to enjoy these same experiences. Most do not have a regular dentist, and there first encounter was most likely an extraction at the local free clinic, where work experience and personal attention are in low demand. Most of you guys have probably shadowed your regular GP, and that is were you made the decision to become a dentist, blacks don't have that same experience. Some of you probably don't even now a black dentist, but you all know a white one.
Well, there goes my little rant. Feel free to reply.
PDizzle said:I took the time and trouble to clearly state that I didn't mean poor, I meant black. All the things you mentioned are disadvantages of the economically impoverished. I agree that they have a tough road to climb and success in spite of that deserves weight when selecting an applicant. And yes, blacks are more likely to be economically disadvantaged but to assume that all whites are born with silver spoons in their mouths and all blacks are born in the ghetto is very sterotypical of you and just plain untrue. (I know you said 'most' but by schools giving preference based soley on race, they are asumming all) Poor whites have all the same troubles you mentioned except its worse because they don't get any "perks" for being white.
If you want to give weight for being poor, great. I agree. Extra weight for simply being black? Hell no. It's making race relations worse. I know it would be nice to have all the numbers line up and have exactly 15% (or whatever the national population of blacks is) enrolled in schools but letting in applicants with low scores and 'fudging the numbers' just doesn't make sense. It covers up the problem, and doesn't address it.
About your comment of not having a black dentist role model I think is fairly weak and certainly not enough to give weight to your application. I'm a white male and my mentor was a hispanic female dentist! Are you telling me you wouldn't become a dentist if you didn't personnally know a black dentist or see one on TV?
I still suggest that institutions base their decisions on the best applicant, not race!
Let me end by saying that I want a society that is blind to race. I know I am and also know that many, many others are not! (black and white) It is my opinion that in order to do this, we need to eliminate the importance of race. Just forget about it. Keep it off the application. This isn't to say that there are not problems that need addressing. I think that economically challenged people need help and the same opportunity as the rest of the Nation but we need to lose focus on the color of your skin.
colt said:IMO, people who are ugly or fat could make the same argument. It seems likely that those who are ugly or fat are going to be looked down upon also.
ElDentistFuturo said:Your solution would be great if people were not discriminated based on the color of their skin. Even if a black male comes from a family where both his parents are doctors and has the biggest house on the block, they still face hurdles that his white counterpart does not. As a college educated black male, I still get into elevators and have grown white women grab their purses. I don't have the "ghetto" look, sagging pants and big shirt, but it stills happens!!!! If a grown white women does this, do you think that some white male that runs the dental school has a different view? Do you think this has a bearing on his choice for acceptances? Do you think that this has an effect of how many blacks get accepted? I ask these question because I really think that some young white students really have no idea. They had a few black friends in highschool, maybe a few more in college, and now think that the world is all good and great based on their small view. Give me a break! Could you truthfully tell me that you have never been in a group of only white people and heard some racial joke about some other ethnic group? Do you think this doesn't carry over to their professional lives? Yes, I know that black people do this too, but we are not usually in a position to stop that other group from excelling.
colt said:It seems like those women grabbing their purse or those telling racial jokes are the uneducated thus, they aren't in a position to stop others from excelling. Comparing a random white woman to a professional educator isn't logical.
First of all, you generalize and stereotype more than more bigots I have ever heard.ElDentistFuturo said:Like most whites, you would assume it is the uneducated. Well let me enlighten you. The elevator that I was getting on was at a university teaching hospital, one of only two public medical schools in the state. After I had gotten the job, I found out she was in hospital administration, a Vice Chancellor (can't remember the exact title). Like most black males, poor or not, I am guilty untill proven innocent.
And, yes I also believe that many other people are discriminated against, but don't come near the preconcieved notions people harbor against blacks.
JohnUNLV said:Yes, for many years blacks (and all minorities for that matter) were discriminated against, and that is a horrible thing. Punishing todays youth for mistakes of their forefathers is hardly helping the situation, it is just perpetuating the cycle. Discrimination is discrimination, PERIOD, there is no such thing as GOOD discrimination and there is no way any racist organization can be considered "rightfully so."
JohnUNLV said:First of all, you generalize and stereotype more than more bigots I have ever heard.
Secondly, so only black males are guilty until proven innocent? What a bunch of bull****! I grew up poor (very poor) and have been "guilty" my entire life, I too get followed by store clerks and security guards, mostly because I'm YOUNG and poor. They dont care if I'm a white male, they are just cautious against potential threats and a young male (black or white) is much more of a threat (percentage-wise) than an older person or female.
You talk about blacks going to bad schools as if they are the only ones or that they cant learn anything there if they didnt want to. Well, let ME enlighten YOU, you can learn if you WANT to. But, you have to want it, which most POOR (not black) students dont care or want to learn. I grew up in ghettos my whole life and went to some of the worst schools in the city and yet I still managed to get good grades, even though I was suspended almost every other week and I was even expelled from two different middle schools for fighting. Yet, somehow I persevered, got good grades in high school, got into college and am now accepted to dental school. I'm still poor, have no regular dentist, hardly did any shadowing and pretty much no extra-curricular activites. If you get good grades and good scores they will let you in. Period.
Being poor is harder than being black in todays society, and PDizzle points this out beautifully.
Do blacks not tell white jokes? Why on Earth would you bring up such a ridiculous point like that? Every single black comedian makes their money off of making fun of whites. Am I upset about that? No. Am I going to cry about it and claim racism? No. Why? Because THE TRUTH IS FUNNY! Look at Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, two of the funniest black comedians of the past 5-10 years and all of their best bits are about white people or race in general. I have been called every racist white name in the book and have never used the N word. Again you generalize and stereotype way beyond what you should, and you constantly use a Red Herring (sp?).
PDizzle again points out a fabulous example of how you make it out to be some sort of conspiracy. Women grabbing their purses may have nothing to do with you in particular, maybe she got mugged or raped last week, ever think of that? Maybe she has poor social skills. No one is collectively collaborating against you. You are just playing the race card over and over as so many others do. It is not becoming of an educated person like yourself. An educated person should know that even though racism still exists (in both directions), it has lessened vastly and if you do what is expected of you as a solid citizen and a competitive student, then you can get into any school you wish.
Last point, and sorry this post is so long...How can you be against racism towards blacks, talk about how bad you have it, talk about how horrible it is and what a disadvantage you are at, and then want to place all of that on another race? Is that not the worst case of "passing the buck" you have ever heard of? How can you be okay with schools discriminating against whites when you are so against it towards blacks. Is that not the epitome of hypocrisy?
To quote PDizzle, racism is racism, discrimination is discrimination, you are either against it in all forms, or for it. Period.

If they were to open their doors to all applicants then who would treat blacks in urban areas where there is already a shortage of dentists?
