So I'll soon be done with my freshmen year in about 3 weeks. I wanted to know what the typical sophomore year looks like besides taking classes...i.e EC? shadowing? any other stuff that I am suppose to be already started by the junior year?

I'm finishing up my second year here at VCU. I took...

Fall:
Ecology
Gen Chem II and lab
Psych 101
Life Science 101 (gen ed for science majors..)
Ethics and Applications

Spring:
Organic Chem w/lab
Statistics
Cell Bio
Communications technology and global society (gen ed)

Organic isn't as bad as everyone makes it seem.

edit - Also, I did lots of shadowing over breaks and also did my internship/job, assistant at a children's hospital in the dental dept.

I would like to be more exact.
If you can get a 3.7+ gpa then don't worry about anything else.
a 3.7 student with a 23+ dat does not need more than 50 hours shadow and volunteer to get into a great school.

However, if you will not then do some volunteering.
try to get like 50 hours or so soph year

IMO 99% work on gpa
1% everything else.

GOOD LUCK

The best thing you can do for your future is to work for a dentist. I worked as a dental assistant for a few summers, and the things I learned there has really helped me get into dental school and be ahead of my classmates clinically (even now, as a D3). I'm a lot more calm and confident in dealing with new cases/problems than my classmates, mainly b/c I've already seen it done before. Even in talking with patients or explaining certain things, I feel more confident (and I'm definitely a better salesperson, can tell them for a fact they "hey, it's going to be a LOT more expensive in private clinic, trust me b/c I've worked out there!").

If you're thinking of specializing, I would go ahead and shadow as many specialists as I can during the summers. It's always interesting too, to see how different offices are set up and run (and you can make mental notes for yourself, to think ahead of how you would like YOUR office to be set up one day).
