Hi all,
I am new to the pre-med world (and new to SDN forums). I'm a chemical engineer who has done a lot of research in the field of regenerative medicine, and I would like some feedback on my chances at applying to med school. My credentials are below:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Currently studying for B.S.E Chemical Engineering (Honors)
Michigan Resident
c.GPA = 3.54
s.GPA = 3.57
1.5 years regenerative medicine research experience, currently writing a paper for publication with myself as first author. Presented research at several conferences and won my university's undergraduate research award.
1 semester as a T.A. / Tutor for freshmen engineering students.
1 year as a representative for my engineering fraternity to engineering college officials, 1 semester as fraternity vice president.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do have some volunteer experience, although it wasn't clinical and none of it was documented, I just did it for fun with some friends. I am going to work this semester on physician shadowing and clinical volunteering, as well as studying for the MCAT. My goal is to apply for this upcoming application cycle.
Specifically, I have a problem with my GPA. It is considered good for chemical engineering (I'm in the top 16% of my class), but mediocre for medical school admissions. Also, I have B's in both freshmen bio and sophomore biochemistry, but the rest of my science grades are great.
Furthermore, my sophomore year I had to withdraw from my Calculus 3 class, so there will be a "W" on my transcript. It's a long story, but basically a family member was addicted to drugs, and I had to take time away from school to help him get on the right track, and so decided to drop my Calculus 3 class. I was wondering if my chances are seriously hindered because of this?
Thank you for reading this long, detailed post!
