As I will be applying this coming cycle, I am at the point where I really need to assess any holes in my application. so, lend me a hand...
junior, cell/molecular bio and history double, english minor, good gpa from a good school and competitive mcat score. Research for 2 years so far, 2 different labs, publication (big one) in the works for one and maybe more than one for the other (though not sure if theyll be actually published by summer, by secondaries and interview time it surely will). Both PIs well known, and I'll have good LORs from them, great LOR from history professor... Boy scout leader, various community service projects through that and with school orgs, coed honors fraternity (not a bull**** EC, i have always held positions etc), premed and history honor societies, writer/director/producer for student telivision station (which i founded along with 2 others, this will be taking up a lot of my time for the rest of my college career), good bit of upper level science work (and good grades, had a more of a rough start in freshman/sophomore years), i come from a less than spectacular background, so, ive got the overcoming adversity thing, plus the hurricane etc.
thats just about everything worth mentioning (while keeping this slightly brief)... WHAT AM I MISSING???
clinical experience as far as i can tell. any other holes? i plan on shadowing docs periodically this semester, and maybe volunteer at my university's hospital (top choice of mine too) if i have time. then i'll hopefully do some sort of clinical research in the summer (i plan on submitting amcas as early as possible, so this might not be very far off the ground by then, are future plans covered in any way on the app?) Will this be enough clinical exposure? My top choice school is really trying to start bringing in the research dollars, so I'm hoping my experience will be a big plus and theyll overlook any lacking areas, but what about other schools? I was on the path to a PHD at first (hence the lack of volunteering etc) then have slowly progressed through MD/PHD, and have now totally decided on the MD alone, basic science research is not what i want to do for the rest of my life.
