hi there, I am an IMG and I am applying to the match this year, and I think I have a very decent chance in matching in a specific surgery program, as many of you know that after an FMG matches and signs the contract ,he/she gets a statement of need from the ministry of health from your country to apply for the J-1 visa, my question is what happens if I match but could not get the letter on time to start the residency ( around july) what happens to my spot then? how long will the spot stay " reserved " for me? what if a similar situation occurs with a US senior who matches but then something happens and he/she can't start the residency in time and wanna postpone it for a year or so? do they have to reapply to the next match or does the spot stay " reserved" and for how long. I would be very grateful if anyone can tell me how it works...

Case by case basis. Some programs will let you start a "little" late, but HOW late depends on the program, how much call coverage they have to have for you, etc. You may be able to defer for a year, but programs will want to know as early as possible, so they might fill that space.

Can't be more specific than that.
