okay, i'm studying for a midterm right now, and I seriously think i'm gonna flunk this baby. I just checked and the class is offered this summer before med school starts so I can retake it. what do you think would happen? ****, i'm kind of stressed, i totally blew off school for all the application bull**** and now its biting me in the ass. 😡 😡

just wanted to say good luck...hopefully you won't have to retake it in the summer so you can actually have a break b4 you start med school. if you're bound to get an F, can't you just drop it for a W and retake it? how do med schools look at that?

well, the first thing that comes to mind -- is the course required for graduation? or maybe even more important, is the course a med. prereq. course (like physics, chem, or bio)...

if it is you could try last stab to see the professor (have you been going to class?)

that really sucks that you'll have to go to class before med school starts... just try to bear down and always remember to pray b4 your exam!

 You might lose any acceptances that you may possess. Your fault for spending too much time on SDN and not enough time studying.

I think if the class is not required for grad or for matriculation and you VERY SERIOUSLY think you might fail it, it might be in your best interest to withdraw if it's not to late. Med schools will probably handle a change in your projected schedule better than an F after they accept you. Good luck!!! Oh, and I hope to have you as a classmate at Davis. You can do it.

hey thanks guys. i just got back from my midterm and it sucked cause he made it so it was graded like the SAT where you are docked points for guessing. so that hurt. Its a bio class that is required class for graduation, but its not a prereq for med school. its a lot more complicated than that, but o well its over with, i guess I'll just have to try to do good on the final, and i've never withdrawn before so i don't know if i can still do that, it seems pretty late in the quarter.

I was wondering this same thing. Seem that physics is the evil and I did not pass. What to do now? Retake or just not look back? 😕

hola chica,
I think you can't "not look back" if the class is a pre-med requirement where you will matriculate. They may very well withdraw their acceptance if you haven't kept your end of the bargain. I hope this is some upper division class, but if not you can take it during the summer.

best of luck!

I just got my official acceptance letter yesterday and in clear terms, it says, "if you fail any course, we will revoke your acceptance." I don't know what it is like at other schools, but I am so glad that I got this letter AFTER I found out I had passed Phys. Chem, because I was losing sleep over that grade as it was!!!

Thanx hun,

Hola chica,
My guess is you should be able to take it anywhere you want. A pre-med requirement can be fulfilled anywhere. On the other hand, the med school may say you have to take it at the same school because your application will have changed significantly enough for them to reconsider it. I'd ask rather than take a chance.

good luck!

i'm pre-med and I'm still taking some lower core courses due to different college reqs. and jumping around diff. colleges. So my question is, if you don't have the a's in classes not required for med. school (gov't.) does it make a big difference in getting accepted? Side note: all my other sciences are looking good so far.

You take it again. Did you really need anyone to tell you this?

First of all, if you fail a course, you need to retake the course and score and A (this will average out to the number of hours with a grade of C if you get the A) plus take a course with an equal number of hours and score an A which will get you to an average of B with the same number of hours. Grade "damage control" is long and expensive so try very hard not to fail in the first place. If you can withdraw, then go that route. A "W" looks much better than an "F" and as others have said, if you have any acceptances, they can be rescinded. Wisdom is a better teacher than experience. Don't do something stupid here.

Most acceptances are conditioned on satisfactorilly completing all remaining coursework with grades of C or better. Meaning a med school is within their rights to withdraw your acceptance if you already have one. With an F, they may well do this -- there are too many people on every waitlist who have never failed anything. At a minimum, you can expect them to make you retake it.

folks.

this thread is from 2003!

Abamm21 resurrected it with this post:

"i'm pre-med and I'm still taking some lower core courses due to different college reqs. and jumping around diff. colleges. if you think you might be getting a C in a course for the semester, is it better to just withdraw from the course or continue taking the course and retake it later for a better grade? If you retake it, what will happen to the previous grade...does it get averaged or do they just consider the better grade into your GPA?

As mentioned, if you feel the need to resurrect a 5 year old thread, please state you are doing so (and why) so that the rest of us don't waste time responding to posters who may not even still be on SDN. 😡 Thanks.
