What happens to those students who don't get accepted? Only 40 pct of students get accepted.
They reapply next year, but what do they do in between that year? What will make the professors accept you now? How would they change themselves so they actually get accepted? Because their grades and MCAT will probably be the same.

Don't know which forum this belongs in guys sorry if this is wrong forum.

Improved MCAT, improve GPA. If your numbers are still on the lower side: do SMP, apply earlier, apply broader, apply DO/Carib, practice interview skills, and/or practice writing skills. If not accepted to DO/Carib, consider alternate careers or continue to improve application.

They all spontaneously combust:boom:

Actually many of them reapply, some take time off, some go to Caribbean, some change their fields all together, and do something else with their lives.

It's almost like...there is life after applying

Many people that cant make it into an MD school go to DO school or the carib.

If you are competitive (30+MCAT balanced,3.5+ gpa, clinical EC's/shadowing/volunteering) I would say you either applied to the wrong schools or not to enough schools OR your personal statment was just terrible. (this is assuming you have not been caught for cheating, DUI, Selling crack...). If you have been to lots of interviews but have not been accepted then obviously it is your personality or interviewing skills that need improvement.

Special Masters Program.. I don't know much about them, from what I understand it is a year-long program where you can do graduate-level medical coursework/gain clinical experience.

What do you guys mean by Caribbean? Like they move to another place and try to get accepted there? DO schools hm... Would they be the same schools as MD schools, except your learning to be a DO and applying under the DO names?
Because I couldn't find any DO schools in California on Google. They all pop out to be both of them, no specified category for DO's.

Caribbean - they apply to Caribbean med schools
DO - Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (you can find all the info by simply googling it)

DO = Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. There's an entire pre-osteopathic section on SDN. That's a good place to start learning - by learning I mean searching. Here are a bunch of links as well (thanks ChocolateBear). The DO version of the MSAR will give you the list of schools.

Helpful links for pre-DO's
--How did DO's evolve?
--How can I shadow a DO?
--DO version of the MSAR

--Which schools require a DO LOR?
--Which schools screen for secondaries?
--When is the latest I can apply?
--Secondary essay prompts
--Interview feedback

Oh, I know what DO are. I know the differences between those two. But I was stating could be in one school but you get are studying to be a DO or MD? And that I could not find any public DO schools in California because they all pop up to list both MD and DO schools.
But I didn't get what Caribbean's were.

You can do that, but why bother?

There are only 20ish schools that are DO schools, so the numbers are lower than MD schools.

Caribbeans are my waiters for my honeymoon:smuggrin:. jk But it's usually a last-ditch effort at earning your MD instead of trying DO.

So if you are waitlisted, should you be getting ready to apply for the next cycle? Since you could get pulled off the waitlist up until August or whatever, should you just sit around and wait or what? Can you even apply to a school again while you are still on its waitlist?

Why do you even answer questions like this? There is a thing that now automatically searches for other similar topic threads.

the phrasing of this question was kinda funny. instead of asking, what do people do when they don't get accepted, it asks what happens to them. spontaneous combustion

Maybe this should be moved to hSDN. I have an inkling that a couple of the posters in this thread are still in high school.

If I don't get an anywhere this year, I honestly don't know what big steps I could take to make myself a better applicant. No MCAT retake and no SMP, for sure. I guess I'll try to get some shadowing in while I continue my volunteer work. I guess I'll try to get some more LOR's so I can send like 6-8 of them next year and annoy adcoms into accepting me.

In California, there are 2 DO Medical Schools,
Touro University, and Western University/COMP. They are both private schools.

There are two types of colleges that provide physician credentials,
allopathic which award the MD degree, and the osteopathic, which award the DO degree. Both are fully licensed physicians and both complete residency programs. There are, apparently, atleast 2 roads to Rome.

The thinking must come before the posting

I think that was sort of a valid post about reapplying. Not to be dumb, but I wonder how that will work out for me if I reapply. I mean, I should be trying to send next year's apps when there is still a slight chance I could get pulled off a WL last second, right? Some schools start late. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you don't get in, i will lose faith in the process... i actually check your mdapp profile every week or so to see what happened... do you remember when you sent in your secondaries? Were they late?

Also, yes, you do need to start the process while waiting for that small chance to get in. It will definitely be a bitch. But at least get verified, etc...while waiting...and yes, i agree with you... there's not much you can do to improve your app (you have a freakin' 39!). I would just apply to a wider selection of schools. But do not lose hope. WashU is a #'s *****.

:luck::luck::luck::luck:

PS: I just noticed that you didn't apply to wright state, toledo, or NEOUCOM, why the hell not? you're an OH resident!!! what happened?

Thanks for wishing me luck :) And thanks for the app info about next year.

I sent in all of my secondaries in July/ early August with the exception of Case, Cleveland Clinic, and Michigan, which were sent in on 12/14 (desperation attempt, but awesome schools!). I managed to pull an interview at Cleveland Clinic, so I have that coming up soon and I'm hoping for the best. I passed on the other Ohio schools b/c it was recommended by my pre-med advisor; she said they wouldn't interview me b/c they wouldn't think I would actually matriculate. Looks like we were both a little overconfident about how my cycle would go! Hopefully something pans out :)

i'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! also, almost all the med students I know at OSU were deferred/waitlisted at some point, and were later offered acceptances...if that helps...

again, good luck - i'll be rooting for you...:xf:

thanks! OSU actually already outright accepted 2 other people (that I know about, maybe more) from my UG, so I don't know how that will turn out. I have hope for the other schools! :)

so, let me see, you're assuming that because it's a german study they used german faces? You would have gotten the question wrong if we were doing verbal right now...

actually they used american faces and german faces I think...and some other countries too...it's been a while since i read the study

That makes sense. Heidi Klum probably tips the scale... if they considered her an outlier, I bet Phospho's av would be 200% less attractive.
