I am applying to UNC and VCU.
UNC: I have spoken with a couple of students from UNC, and they seem pretty happy there. Some complained about a few instructors being hard but nothing else real serious. The buildings there are nice, and the people who work there seem helpful.

VCU: I haven't spoken to any of their students, only a faculty member from the school. She talked about their good support system & their D-5 program.

Has anyone heard about what these schools are like? (interviews there, visits to campus, etc.) What was your impression of UNC or VCU?

I'm applying to both of those schools as well. I have a neighbor who interviewed at VCU. He said the school was nice, and that the people were very friendly. He felt like the sim labs were a little older than other schools he'd interviewed at. However, overall, he really liked the school. On a side note, he didn't enroll at that school because they said they'd no longer be granting residency to out-of-staters after the first year.

As for UNC, I've heard they have a great clinical program, and that they still allow out-of-state students to pay resident's tuition after the first year. I've also heard that they don't offer any of the regional boards, only NC's boards. This means if you want to practice in a different state when you graduate, you'll have to travel to a school offering the boards you are interested in, plus you'll have to bring your own patients and an assistant. I'll let you know if I hear more.

Wow! I guess it will be quite expensive for me to go to VCU, looking at their out of state tuition for 4 years. I hope that I get accepted to UNC.

In NC we have the NC rural health loan repayment program. You have to work in an underserved area of NC to qualify. However, this is not a problem for me, since this is my goal anyway. I am from a county in NC where we only have 2 dental offices in the entire county. (3 dentists-1 we share with a neighboring county). I am not a patient at either office. My dentist is so far away I have to pack a lunch to go see him.

I am also applying to Meharry. Hopefully, I will get accepted at one of these schools. Maybe we will both be Tarheels next year, GOOD LUCK Java!!!!!!!!!
