What is a decent path to an ophth res and fellowship?

What is the best way to get there?
I will be an M1 this comming fall.

I know I have to rock the USMLE and do well in class.
I assume research in ophtho is seen as a good thing, but is it better if you do it at the NIH or hopkins, or doesn't that really matter, as long as you've done it?

How does it work for scoring a fellowship? Do you apply for that after residency, during residency or while in med school? Not sure how that works, nor how competitive they are.


And i've heard that ophth matches early, so to try and get some ophth rotations during third year. Is this difficult to do, and can you realistically do this abroad or at some place you hope to match?
