What is advantage of being a pharmacist over a dentist?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Any club, all i can think about is money? =\

i think you're misinformed. dentists make more money than pharmacists.

another thing, theres NO advantage of being in one profession versus another. its more what you want to do and what you want to deal with. they're two completely different fields.

I think being a pharmacist is far better than being a dentist. I base this OPINION, notice I said opinion, on my personal experience. My uncle is a dentist and he never gets a day off, due to having to constantly work in order to keeep his office running. As a pharmacist you have the ability to take time off and you don't have to worry about taking of the administrative functions of running a dental office, or establishing a client base.

Either profession is based on competency. If you're good at what you do, they're both extremely rewarding.

I've got a thing about tinkering around in someone's craw, but that's just me... 😛

I heard that dentists have the highest suicide rate. Don't know if this is true though.

I remembered reading an article from the Straight Dope about this, so I looked it up. Sure enough, it was a real column, and it turned out that white male doctors had the highest suicide rate, although everyone assumes it's dentists, even dentists themselves.

This could happen in pharmacy too if you owned your own store. Some dentists work for HMOs instead of owning their own practice. They can get time off a bit easier.

At least pharmacy isin't like pulling teeth

hi,

i think that this is a question you need to answer for yourself....because if you don't have a valid reason (and money not being one) then why are you applying to pharmacy?? 4 years of school is no fun if you don't even like the stuff you're studying. so find something that you really want to do and stick with it bc you'll be a much happier person. 🙂

ummm...turn your humor detector on

both fields are great. it just boils down to what you want to do.

for me, i think dentistry is a better fit. it is a better fit for a lot of people. just like pharmacy is a better fit for a lot of people.

it is easy for both to find jobs right out of school. it is becoming more difficult for pharmacy practices to start up with the wal-marts of the world out there and whatnot... but who's to say dentistry won't be in the same position as pharmacy and optometry 10 years down the road?

there's lots of money to be made in both fields; you should derive a sense of self-worth from either field because you are helping people.

the one thing i do disagree with is that dentists never get a day off. once again this is from personal experience, but i don't know a dentist who works on fridays! my orthodontist didn't, and neither did my two general dentists.

i think both fields offer plenty of time away from the office if that's what you choose (but you will be paid less, of course).

best of luck to whatever you decide to do!

I am not good enough with tiny detail such as model building to be a dentist. Also I would hate being so close to the faces of strangers, its just too intimate for me.

I wouldn't have to smell bad breath either! Or just looking inside someone's mouth all day.... I'm going to have a counter between me and the crazier people. 😀
