The word gunner gets thrown around way too frequently these days. Nowadays, pretty much anyone who studies is apparently a gunner.

Sort of. It's not "used" for people that are superintense, it's "misused". The definition of the term has not changed. There are ignorant people who bastardize it's use. Sort of like folks calling political conservatives "fascists" or liberals "commies". They don't really mean those folks ascribe to those ideologies, it's just a bastardization of a word with barbs they fling. So too, you might say "Oh Steve is such a gunner". You don't really mean Steve is the guy ripping pages out of library books and screwing his classmates, even though that, in fact, is what the word actually means. Part of the reason premeds on SDN misuse the term gunner is because you actually meet gunners further down the road. But no, the definition of the term hasn't changed with misuse. It still means someone who compromises interpersonal relationships to get ahead. Someone who screws over his classmates. The gunner isn't someone who works super hard to get ahead -- hed rather trip up everyone else. You don't want to be known as a gunner.

What does gunner mean

It's a derogatory title that gets thrown around in hopes of making someone study less so that that everyone else will do better in comparison. It also serves as an excuse for those that don't do well (i.e "I'm not a gunner").
