Hey guys

I have a a quick question as regard to my chance of getting an interview this year. I submitted my AADSAS application in early June, I was planning on doing well on my DAT the 1st time. However, a 17 pretty much sunk that boat pretty well. So now I retook my DAT right before Thanksgiving and got a 20AA and 21 PAT, and I faxed my scores to 17 schools that have not rejected me yet. I applied to 23 schools. Are there's ANY spots still availble out there, when will I be hearing back from schools??

One of my classmate just pretty just told me how I have no shot this cycle at all besides NYU and Boston Everywhere else is gonna be full after 1st round. So ya, that got me really worried. What do you guys think of that statement?? Am I serisously looking @ reapplying AGAIN and wait another year????

Here are my stats
DAT score: 19TS:20AA:21 PAT
18 bio, 20 ochem 22 gen chem 19 RC 19 QR
Extracurricular Activities:
Over 2000 hours of community services (about a 1000 hrs volunteering/shadowing at dental clinics.)
Leadership Experience:
Vice President of the Pre-Dent Club
Marketing Director for the Pre-Dent Class
Anatomy Tutor
Volunteer Services Commitee of the AED Pre-Healths Honors Society.
Research:
NONE
GPA
For schools that'll take the repeated grade if applicant repeat a class, which I did one time.
3.46 overall/3.41 science

For schools that'll take the average of the repeated grade.....
I dont know, it can't be lower than a 3.3 and a 3.17science cause that's my AADSAS grade, and they calculated the repeated class as ONE class.

There is always a chance. I love the people who like to tell others that they're chances are low when they really don't know... Afterall, are they on an Adcomm?? Anyways, if your application stands out enough, which from your detailed post it looks like it does, then you may get a few looks for interviews! It also depends on the Personal Statement, however, and how well your interview goes when you do get an invite. I say don't give up hope, stay optimistic!! I wish you luck!!!

I am on an an adcom; so I think I can give you a somewhat realistic idea of your chances.

Your new DAT score is not outstanding, but it is competitive. Your GPA is average for a DS applicant. You have good additional credentials. If it were the beginning of the cycle, you would likely get several of interviews.

You still probably have a good shot of getting a few interviews, especially with so many applications. Remember schools that operate on a rolling admissions cycle (several rounds of admissions) take the very top applicants in the first round. These were not the people you would have been competing with anyway. You are competing with the more middle of the pack applicants who normally are invited to interview later anyway.

Also, contact the schools that have outright rejected you for low DAT score reasons. They may reconsider your application again during this cycle once they have the new information, especially if they are a school that only considers the latest DAT score.

Faxed? They need the official report, I hope you sent them..

also.. you don't have have a Predents so we have no idea where you applied, and thus can't tell you which schools you have a shot at.

I play for a semi-professional soccer team and have done countless hours of dental shadowing for two orthodontists.
I also work partime at a bank.
My extracurricular activities include: Treasurer Of prehealth Honor Society, Founding Father of a Fraternity, and Soccer Coach.

You definitely need to shadow general dentists. It's not usually good to only be interested in a specialty, when you are applyting.

Also, your DAT score is minimally acceptable. It is not good, but it not hopeless.

Right now, you have a chance but not a good one. With a better DAT score and some general dentistry experience you would stand a much better chance. Also apply early.

Actually, at this point in the admissions cycle time is critical. Fax a copy of your unofficial score report. Then have the official report sent ASAP. Most schools will probably trust you. You won't matriculate before the official report gets there, so there is no reason to lie.

i am applying to nyu, columbia, vcu, bu, pitt, penn, stony brook, michigan tufts, temple, case western. i also made a mistake my gpa is 3.64 bcp is 3.31 and the sciences are 3.55. what do u think my odds are? i also shadowed general dentists but not as much as the specializations.

Without your DAT scores... it's hard to say. But I'll go out on a limb and say you have good chances...

Retracting my previous post...
I think you need to retake the DAT a 15 TS is not going to cut it. Go on the DAT discussion thread, they give good advice and can help you score higher. Good luck!

Your GPA isn't the problem; it's your DAT score that's holding you back. Retake, aim for 20+ in all sections and you should be good to go.

You should retake your DATS. A 15 TS looks really bad. Unless the rest of your application really really really stood out, your extras seem pretty good but you're also missing on research. Maybe also add that to your cup and you'll definitely have a better chance.

i applied this year.. so should i take a year off study for the dats again and reapply for the following school year?? what should i do in the mean time?

I did the same thing this year. Applied early bombed DAT. Fell into deep depression, shook it off , and re-took DAT= better scores. I only applied at one school and pulled my app. at all of my schools because I didn't want to show that I applied to dental schoool 5 million times. I got my one interview. So who knows I'm just going to do my best and cross my fingers. You never know! Look on the bright side you let your apps. ride!
