I didn't know using rape imagery was associated with elitism and competitiveness... I went to one of the top three liberal arts colleges in the country and we didn't use that kind of language.

I can't speak for anyone else, but in my mind killing is probably the worst of all crimes against man. Worse, even, than rape. And yet, would you criticize me for saying this? While I personally wouldn't choose to use a rape analogy, why jump to conclusions and start a witch hunt? It seems to me you are using a so-called "compassionate motive" as a weapon to criticize others rather than actually work for social change.

What you (Adam,Illinois,Fred) don't seem to realize is that language is a catalyst for social change. Most people don't realize how much language influences one's perceptions of things. I'm speaking very generally here - but that's the gist. Stinky was just asking questions to get you to start thinking about the language you use. No need to be defensive. You learned something - or at least considered something you obviously had not contemplated before. Thank her, decide how/if you want to integrate this new peice of information into your life, and then move on.

Here's some advice I feel compelled to give eventhough I've already decided that I don't like you. My suggestion is to not use the rape anology. Makes you seem ignorant. Most people who hear this (outside of your subculture) will likely feel as I do and also not like you before they even meet you. That's the way the educated world works.

Just as a minority can say something that's racist, a woman can say something that's misogynist. Even if she's not a misogynist, it doesn't mean the phrase isn't, just that she's not sensitive to it.

I hear it all the time. I don't like it and try not to say it. Stinky has been trying to make the point that it's offensive and I think he's made that point, even if he's a bit more fired up about it than some of us who agree with him but don't want to get in yet another unwinnable argument.

You both gotta know that when it comes down to comparing MCAT scores in order to win points in the argument, it's already a lost cause.
