NYS volunteer EMT-B here.
-Some agencies will cover the cost of your EMT-B class if you sign a contract with them. If you take the class at a college, then you also may have the opportunity to transfer the credits to your home institution (my university gave me 9 credits on a quarter system for an EMS 110 course).
-I believe the starting pay for EMT-B's is around 10-12$ in my area. Much closer or even above 12$ with prior field experience. Position openings vary, but I have never heard of anyone have an extraordinarily difficult time finding a job.
-Unless you're going for a BLS agency, ambulance agencies will want you to have your driver's license. I work with an agency that primarily runs ALS rigs (1 EMT-B/I and 1 EMT-CC/P). Depending on the call, either the basic or the paramedic will need to drive his or her partner to the hospital. You can become an EMT-B without your driver's license, but you may have trouble finding a job.
