I really need help in the organic section as some of you already know. Here's what I have, please tell if these materials are sufficient enough:

1) Kaplan Book (the Review Notes from the live class and the Blue Book)
2) Scholarware TopScore (which I wish I bought way before my 1st DAT)
3) the flashcards from Kaplan (not sure of they will help that much)

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

I second the ExamKrackers. SOLID book to study OCHEM and get much needed practice.

Also, those Kaplan flash cards for the MCAT that you mentioned helped.

the best i found is my ochem book. did all the question in the back of the chapter which made the actual dat ochem cake. the actual was too easy. it was a joke.

the best preparation is to read your o-chem book. Focus on the concepts and apply them to the reactions mechanisms. Memmorization never worked for me with except of frecking anatomy.

No ExamKrackers + Big KAplan Book + Kaplan Course Flash Cards = at least 20

I concur with everyone here. Exam Krackers seriously is the book.

However, if you are pressed for time I would suggest reviewing the Kaplan book (very) thoroughly. Then take Top Score and use your mistakes to recover those topics that you had weaknesses in.

There are several reasons why you might want to do this. Reviewing the Kaplan book first lets yo have an idea of the material that is specific for the DAT. You'll find that the DAT requires you to only cover some basic organic reactions and topics. In other words the Kaplan book is to the point.

If after using it, you find that you want some improvement (BTW getting anything above 20 on Top Score will very likely get you a solid scores in the middle 20s in the actual DAT), you can review those topics again or start anwsering questions in Exam Krackers on those topics. The technique with that is do the questions in groups of 50 and mark your answers right or wrong, then go back to wrong answers and try to select the right answers from the remaining choices without looking at the explanations. Keep doing this until you get them all right. Then review the explanations for everything you didn't get right the first time or anything you were doubtful on but got the correct answer somehow.

I firmly believe in the thorough review, followed by diagnostic test, followed by directed study technique. This way you can concentrate on nomenclature or free radical addition or whatever area you feel you need to improve.

As for methods of learning, I agree with everyone who said that you must understand mechanisms with an emphasis on the word "understand." DAT questions will make sure that you can run through a reaction in your mind (of course you're free to use the scratch paper during the test). This is an essential skill to ace the DAT organic section.

Another thing I would say is to take the actual test as soon as you are ready, if you wait you will likely forget things. It doesn't hurt to take the test early as you will do well if you are prepared judging by your Top Score Pro scores. This also allows you to retake the test in case you really need to (which you won't need to do if you go in getting good scores on the practice tests).

Another decent book is the ACS organic chem study guide.

i don't think the exam krackers book helped me at all. i think it's a waste of time and money

^^^ It depends on the person really. I didn't use Exam Krackers Organic questions but I used their 1001 General Chemistry book before and I thought it was great.

If you can just take a practice test and do well just from using Kaplan blue book then you have no need to go to the Exam Krackers book. Even if a person needs some improvement in scores my recommendation would be to just re-read the whole Kaplan organic section and focus on those topics where the wrong answers were. If even after a second thorough review someone still needs to improve then they really need to commit some serious time to the material and the Exam Krackers 1001 is the best way to do it. I really think that most people will not need to go that far, but I am sure that a good number of talented people will need that kind of intensive training sometimes since everyone has strengths and weaknesses.

When and if you recognize that you need a serious commitment to organic chemistry (for example - this can apply to any subject), then spending the 50-100 hours doing all the questions on the topics covered in the DAT, and grading and analyzing mistakes simply cannot be a waste of time.

Maybe you didn't need to do it, but some people may have had really bad O chem classes at school. Some people may need to re-evaluate their learning style for the subject. All in all going through the 1001 questions book will make sure that in 99% of cases that you've surmounted whatever is the cause for your less than desired scores on practice tests (and hence the real DAT).

Hey all. I've purchased the following DAT books based on all the recommendations given on this board. They are as follows:
1. Kaplan Blue Book
2. Topscore
3. Examkrackers 1001 Questions in McAt Organic Chemistry

I just want to double check the Examkrackers book. Is this the one? (it has MCAT in the title, which is why I'm a little confused)
