I was wondering what was the worse advice any of you had received from a career councelor........

Mine?

What are you going to do if you dont get into medicine?

My answer:
If i focus on what I will be if I do not become a doctor then I am not really focusing on what I want to be. I will just apply again (and then what?) apply again!

The best one yet though was given to a friend of mine:
You don't have to take biology, your a math major (YEAH EVEN THOUGH HE IS GOING FOR MEDICINE IN THE LONG RUN!! DUH)

ahhh sleep is for the weak 🙂 actually I am waiting on a reply on some essay questions from jlee, we are both burning the midnight oil 🙂

Worse advice I ever got was from a few people that are close to me. They urged me to drop my dream of going into medicine and just settle for Pharmacy. Although Pharm is a great career it's not what I want to do.

Nevertheless, I persevered and got in... can't wait to get my MD in 2008 🙂

Worst advice I have ever received from advisors:

1. "You should really just stick with occupational therapy--I'm not sure you have the talent to get into med school."

thankfully I DIDN'T listen to that...

2. "Oh don't worry, if you don't get into MCO early assurance you'll be able to take physio and biochem and stats and still be able to prep for the MCAT in 2 months..."

at least I can look back now and laugh...and feel bad for all the future pre-meds who have to hear this 🙁 🙁

worst advice i ever got? gee, where do i begin?

my parents: "are you sure you want to go into medicine? I don't think you're cut out for it." gee thanks mom

my pre-med advisor: "so many of you want to go to medecine. But you are all at a disadvantage because of the school you all chose to attend. Perhaps you should all consider another career like physical therapy or pharmacy." uh huh, she's just bitter.

the volunteer cordinater at the hospital: "it usually gets cold in the floors because the air conditioner is on, and the jackets are pretty thin, so you may want to take a sweater to wear underneath." not once when i was there did the air conditioner work, and the jacket we had to wear? I could wear it now in the winter and stay warm in it.

Actually my worst advice from a counselor came from high school.

My counselor was so used to kids barely passing 9th and 10th grade (yes she was an over worked public school counselor) that when she saw my stats she exclaimed "Oh you'll have no problem getting into Yale undergrad". Needless to say I didn't get in and was devastated for a short time, but now I'm so happy that I didn't go there b/c I went to a great undergrad.

But yes, counselors are often too supportive too quickly or not supportive at all...

From my college premed counselor the first time I applied...

"oh yes, applying to four schools is fine"

Any wonder why I applied to 16 this round?

some kid who was in a premed club or something...

dude...just go pharmacy.

my college advisor told me participating in a varsity sport would hurt my chances of getting in. That was the first and last time I ever went to him.
