Is there any way that you can still get accepted into medical school if you got an F your first semester as a freshman? It's a non science course, and more specifically it's a Gen Ed, they're trying to weed out the rest of us freshman.

Try to drop it. The most important thing is that it's not a sci class so it won't go into your BCMP. So not a big deal during freshman year, just make sure that it's the only F.

I'd try to avoid getting an F. Some schools have freshman forgiveness, so if you re-take it it will be erased from your record and med schools (and AMCAS) will never know it happened. When I was interviewing at schools, I had to answer several questions about a class that I withdrew from, so if you do get an F, start thinking up of good excuses (ie mono, bird flu, sex change operation, etc.)

I got one F my freshman year. That was back in 1998. I have been accepted to 6 med schools so far. Do better from now on and you'll be fine.

If you think that's weeding out, wait til you get to organic chem.

I got more that one F in BCMP classes, I retook them all, got 4.0s and I've been accepted into 2 schools so far.

Anything is possible!

My F used to give me panic attacks (it was a summer school course). Noone's asked me about it at interviews, except one where I brought it up, and the interviewer said it was meaningless (the grade), because it clearly didn't reflect the rest of my transcript.

Relax.

I had 7 F's spread out over the first 4 of my 6 years of undergrad.

i think i am the queen of f's. i have four semesters of failing grades in a non-related major and i am in.
it is possible, you just have to explain the circumstances.

Haha, its like, did you fail spelling class? j/k

I also have an F, a D- and a couple C- on my freshman transcript. I'm not in yet, but I'm a junior and my GPA is ~3.3 I'm going to add a fifth year so hopefully I'll get up in the 3.5 range. Definitely some improvement from my 1.56 fresh GPA 😱 ...

About freshman forgiveness, my understanding is that AMCAS does average all the courses you've ever taken...at least thats what I thought it said somewhere in the 100 page instruction manual. Can someone confirm/disconfirm this? I would prefer disconfirm

AMCAS wants you to put information in about all of your courses, no course gets wiped, even if your University has some sort of forgiveness program (besides, it's only fair to students who did well the first time, or students at universities with no such program). If, however, there was no record of the course being taken, it would be up to you to own up to it to AMCAS. Needless to say the consequences of being dishonest and found out after the fact are quite high. Be honest.

Yeah, its on my transcript so oh well. As for being fair...well thats a debate of its own :meanie:
