I have no clue what to do if I cannot get into pharmacy? Major in Chemistry or something?

i will probably try again but if anything i'll have a b.s. in microbiology and will probably attend grad school to get my masters.

if i don't get in by fall '09...i will probably look into

a) Master's in Public Health
b) Certified Laboratory Scientist (licensure)
c) Medical school in the Philippines

haha yeah, in that order.

Back up plan is pharmacy. My friend got rejected from 30 pharmacies school over the course of 8 years. Right out of high school, all he did was trying to get in. He attended more than 20 different schools in several states trying to fulfill his pre-reqs. His myspace page has a long list of schools:rolleyes:. It didn't even occur to him to settle down and get a BS degree. He taught me nobody should have a back-up plan for pharmacy...Now, he's 24 attending Nova.

I would talk less, go on sdn more, and work like a slave, yeah

Why Medical school in the Philippines?

Why Medical school in the Philippines?

With Phillipines Medical schools they do year long rolling admissions and will often have enetering classes throughout the year instead of once a year. This is appealing to anyone who doesn't want to spend another year applying. There are obviously drawbacks but if you pay tuition, they will let you in for most part.

My plan is keep applying until I get in. Because I will get in eventually. I don't care how many times I have to apply or interview. I will get in. I have a Master's degree in another field, but I'm working as a tech. I'll continue to work as a tech until I get accepted.

Law school or Business school

I have a degree in Biology so I would reapply again. I'm not sure if graduate school will be worth the time and money if you are not going to do anything with that degree. I've thought about becoming an X-ray technician as a possible backup career. What do you guys think?

Why Medical school in the Philippines?

i have friends who have done it/are doing it and i have tons of family there. i'd rather be there than the carib.

haha...it's funny because lots of people view pharmacy as the backup in case they don't get into med school...i'm the other way around :D

working at starbucks, psychology PhD, psychiatrist/MD, or being a high school teacher.

if i don't get accepted anywhere, then i'll make my own pharmacy school...

I'll probably keep trying and getting more pharmacy experience while stiil in school and if I don't get in the by the time I get my B.S I'll apply for either the M.P.H program or MCG's pharmacology program

I'm going to get in, I'll will myself in!!

....but if that doesn't happen, I'll apply again next year. I'm only a Jr. now, so I'll finish up my degree and apply.

Right now I am working on a BS in Rehabilitation Studies with a specialization in addictions, I'll apply and if i dont get in work on my masters and apply again. If I still don't get in at least I will be able to have a career as a Rehab counselor helping people with addictions. But becoming a pharmacist is still my goal.

I will be disappointed but I will give it another chance for next year before considering NP or PA school.

Med school is supposedly harder to get into than Pharmacy. What makes you think you can get in Med if you can't even get in Pharm?

Are the Med schools in the Philippines 10x easier than here in the U.S?
If so, then I can understand why you'd goto med after being rejected from Pharm.

Rock band or escort service...nuff said

I'll just continue to work on a B.S. in Chemistry.

That's not a fair statement. It's not a matter of getting in necessarily, it's an alternate career path of what one wants. Medical school has always been second under my choices.

I am pretty sure the reference for med school being easy refers to schools not in America... If you have the funds - you could probably get accepted right now to a foreign medical school - its getting back in with your license that is the difficult part. If you cant get in here however - it may be a good option for some people.

yeah...my friend is talking about how she has an econ major with NO science experience from SF State at her school. The Philippines stresses ethics and personality over pure science ability. Also, the exam to get in (NMAT) makes more sense to me than the MCAT. Her school sees lots of Nepalese, Korean, and Persian students because of the superior English instruction in these schools.

Yes...easy to get into, butmore difficult in securing a residency here in the U.S. It's possible, however...you just have to be motivated.

Her quote is: "Why should I bust my ass for 2-3 years here trying to GET IN to a medical school? I'd rather get just in and bust my ass WHILE in school and get somewhere."

It's definitely not for everyone, especially if you can't handle high humidity in a tropical setting or a very hurried city environment in a developing country (3rd world)...but I admire her logic and tenacity, she'd make a great physician.

(haha i feel like this should be in the med forum, oh well)

clinical nutrition! if i dont get in fall '10 then i'll become an RD (registered dietitan) and retake whatever prereqs i need and keep applying til i get in.

I should go for MD in the Philippines after Pharm.D here. The tuition there is so much cheaper.

I don't need back ups....I'm going to Harvard.

lol...ok maybe I have seen Legally Blonde too many times... :)

If I don't get in the first year I apply then I will just take more courses to add to my pre reqs list and keep truckin until I reach my goal.

not to mention cost of living! my friend and her sister are there..they bought a house, hired a maid, a cook, and a private drive/car and live like rock stars. haha, gotta love that exchange rate!

What does your friend do?

if i don't get in, then i'm just goin to finish getting my biochemistry degree. it's the only thing that makes sense since I will have about 38 hrs left of credits. with a little summer school, I can graduate by '09

What does your friend do?

they're med students...there's 4 of them (they tried to make it 5 with me, but wasn't approaching desperation just yet), so all the parents pooled in for stuff. hired help is cheap anyway.

i know...do whatever it takes to kill time, work, play, keep on doing something, work overtime, find three jobs, ...so you don't have time to contemplate about suicide or doing something stupid like making on the news

no back up plan. I will apply and keep applying until i get into unc's school of pharmacy, no matter what.

Pharmacy WILL be my life
so, keep reapplying? retake courses to improve grades?
study the PCAT more and try to improve the scores [i'm not even at the stage at applying yet]

get a part time job meanwhile i suppose

Re-apply, re-apply, and re-apply. Haha.. In the meantime, re-take classes I did crappy in (like the gen bio courses I slept through my freshman year) and maybe start on my masters to improve my stats.

I plan to continue to get good grades, work hard, have good extracurriculars, and I plan on getting experience in the field. I just need to keep my GPA high and study hard for the PCAT. I think that as long as you keep your grades up, score high on the PCAT, and have good experience, you should be set.
My second choice would be veterinary school, followed by med school. Although I really don't want to go to med school.

I'll have my BS in Chemistry so I'll either go and do my masters in Pharmacology or do Synthetic Organic Chemistry.

I think it's a good idea to establish the number of application attempts you are willing to make. Consider the yearly costs of applying, the stress of having to take a recent PCAT, as well as other expenses. If you truly want to keep applying until you get in even after five attempts, then you better plan to have a job as you can't be in school forever.

you could always go to australia where they still offer a BS in Pharmacy or England where they offer a MA

ok so I was just surfing pharmacy schools today and I found this one called Palm Beach Atlantic in Florida - near the beach -and they say that they guarantee you a spot in the Pharmacy Program if you complete the pre-professional requirements there!!!!!!!!!!! This is big news www.pba.edu look for graduate studies and pharmacy and then guaranteed admission program !!

Um, it's not quite as simple as that. Keep reading.....

Complete the 63-64 hours of pre-professional requirements (see table below) with a minimum grade point average of 3.4 for both cumulative and science courses. All pre-professional course work must be completed by May of the year seeking admission into the School of Pharmacy.

Take the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) and score at least 70 percent on the composite score. The PCAT must be taken no later than the January test date.

Be interviewed by a Pharmacy faculty member and receive an unconditional favorable recommendation from the School of Pharmacy Admissions Committee.

yeah, if you can do all that, then chances are you'd get accepted plenty of places! easier said than done.

i was wondering
when you get your bachelor's but need to finish the rest of the pre-reqs or retaking some classes, does it count as apply as grad student?
I was looking at the tuition cost and just wondering.
