Personally, I want to practice in a small to mid-sized city because I tend to believe that areas like that are simply better places to live in...nicer people, etc.

I ask because this is a common question on secondary applications and during interviews. Is there a reason this question is considered to be an important one for adcoms?

well i think they'd like it if you said you want to go practice in a poor rural area bc they are underserved. or any underserved area, in general.
but then you'd have to really back up your claims and probably have prior experience to come off as convincing.

personally, i want to practice in the city.

I agree. I want to work in a medically underserved, urban area and interviewers tossed me many a' questions about it.

Depends on how my rotations go (she said confidently). If I decide on general practice, I'll go way rural. Country. Hick. Mountain country. Somewhere that still sees regular measles outbreaks.

If I go virology (emergent!), neonatology or neurology, I'll probably be living in the suburbs of a city.

Those are my areas of interest now (especially virology & neonatology). We'll see how much that changes when (hah!) I get into med school. In three more years.
