Hi, I'm an undergrad trying to figure out what kind of doctor I should be, so I apologize if I'm using the wrong terminology.

I'm very interested in diagnosing and surgery, but I heard you can only pick one, diagnosing with internalist and surgery with surgeon. Is there something that have the best of both worlds? I also would want to be in a fast pacing environment and work with a varying patient age group. What kind of doctor does this sound like, and what would I need to specialize to be this doctor?

You should focus on being an excellent undergrad student. You're years away from even needing to worry about medical specialty, and any decision you make now is likely to change six times before you're done.

Also, don't pursue any doctors. You'll get arrested. :D

I honestly am not even sure what you're talking about with diagnosing vs. surgery...kind of sounds like you don't speak english well (not trying to be insulting, but your terminology makes no sense). Sounds kind of like EM though if I'm interpreting what you're saying correctly. Either way, do well in UG before even thinking about this stuff, as you're not going to be any kind of physician if you don't get into medical school.

The best way to find out while in undergrad is to shadow some different specialties. Some good ones that have more clinical/diagnosing might be ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and urology. Also, I second @HomeSkool, do well enough to get into med school and you’ll have plenty of time to decide!

It would not be desirable to specify what type of medicine you plan to practice in a primary med school application, as 80% of med students change their minds after a broader exposure to medical specialties than they had while shadowing. Or they are forced to change their minds due to having less-competitive scores on the Step exams. It's best to appear to be open minded.

Get into medical school first, do well in class/boards/clerkships and then decide what field you want to pursue.

@Goro and @gonnif approve the literal interpretation :bookworm:

Enjoy undergrad. Make friends, party, and try not to stress too much.

When not having fun, be sure to perform well academically and participate in ECs that will make you a more attractive applicant.

Best of luck to you.

You should first focus on shadowing so you can figure out what doctors actually do.

I've got nothing more to add to what's been stated above. You're worried about crossing a bridge that is so far down the road it's really moot right now. Cross the one that's in front of you and then the next one. It's alright having a long-term plan, but at the same time don't let all that add anxiety and rob you of the joys that you should be having right now in college. Are you kidding me? You're in college. Do you have any idea how much fun college is? Cheers.

When I clicked on this thread I thought it'd be about what kind of doctor you should marry...

Reminds me of the jokes:

Where do you hide a dollar from a neurosurgeon?

with his wife

Be the CEO of a medical organization where you own the surgeons and diagnosticians. Cut their salaries, tie their pay to quality performance metrics and watch them dance. You will be very happy and rich. Just ask HCA CEO R. Milton Johnson, annual compensation $12 M. He only earned a Bachelor’s Degree.

Start there: college degree

That's a question reserved for your third year of medical school when you experience your rotations.

What kind of doctor should I pursue: A slow one? An unperceptive one?

A few jokes:
How do you hide a dollar from an internist?
A: put it under a bandage

How do you hide a dollar from a radiologist?
A: tape it to a patient

How do you hide a dollar from a Orthopedist?
A: tape it to the the patient chart

How do you hide a dollar from a general surgeon?
A: Tape it to his kids

How do you hide a dollar from a plastic surgeon?
A: trick question, you cant

A medical student, internist, pathologist, and surgeon go hunting.

A bird flies in the air and the medical student raises his shotgun but cannot tell if the duck is really a duck so doesnt shoot.

The internist sees the duck and begins to wax poetic, "While this does look like a female mallard, the 18th century Chinese sea duck would look quite similar as it had a green head. Of course that duck has been extinct for 50 years and .." but before he can finish the duck has flow out of range.

The surgeon sees something flying out of the corner of his eye and shouts, "Look it flies, Boom " He shoots it out of the sky. He turns to the pathologist and asks, "so what was it?"

3 orthopedists are in the woods and they come upon some tracks.

The first says, "wow I have read about these tracks. They look just like bear tracks."

The second says, "While I appreciate your expertise, I am quite certain that these are actually mountain lion tracks"

The third was hit by a train.

Someone once told me they wanted to be an "unimportant doctor." I would recommend against being one of those.
