Hi,

I have 3 different opportunities and was wondering which one would look best and count for clinical hours for PA school. There is a position as a volunteer at a hospice, working as a medical scribe and working as a caregiver. Thanks for the advice!

I'm planning to apply to med school, but I think I can give some advice regarding this based on my observations. When I was a medical scribe, my coworker was applying to PA schools and it seemed many of them didn't consider his time as a scribe. He eventually got into a school that accepted his hours, but I remember him stressing over it and having to make sure the schools he was applying to were accepting of his hours. So I would not recommend scribing for experience to apply to PA School (even though you learn SO MUCH).

I'm currently a hospice volunteer that provides companionship for patients in their homes. I don't provide any direct care, but I talk to them, spend time with them, and comfort them for a few hours each week. I'm not sure if this would be considered clinical or not. There's also an option in the program I'm in to be in the clinical setting, but it's basically like volunteering in the ER (mainly you just help out the nurses and techs with everything with limited time with the patients).

It seems that what they count as clinical experience is different from school to school. After glancing at the GWU program and Emory program, it honestly sounds like they prefer more direct patient care. I would say your best bet would be as a caregiver IMO.

Good luck!
