What makes a candidate competitive for scholarships?

For those of you who received a scholarship in Dental School, what do you think made you competitive? Grades? DAT? Extras?

GPA -- 3.91 science, 3.82 cumulative (B.S. Biology)
Extras -- division 1 college athlete (basketball and track)

Mostly grades (3.97 gpa) and a lot of research experience.
