I am interviewing tommorow at an old lady's house( late 80's). The job consists of , well helping out with some minor stuff- like dinner(sandwiches), a little maintainance (I assume), taking her to the hospital and for errands and some light stuff here and there.
In return, I get free apartment and pay. Considering how expensive housing is here, I really want this job. Plus I will get to help someone,needless to say- it makes me really happy at the end of the day.
What qualities do you think are they looking for? How should I present myself to appear helpful and nice? Not that I am not, but I just dont want to sound to superficial and lose it. There are obviously others interviewing too.
I appreciate any tips.
Thanks.

what area is that you'll be living?

i think with older people, its always good to show/say that you're patient and understanding, caring also of course.

do you have any experience w/old folks? that would be something to trump. if not, play up whatever your strong points are.

good luck, and let us know how the interview goes!

Area = La Jolla
Yeap I do have some experience with old people.
Actually an incident yesterday night pissed me a lot. There was this obese, very old person on the bus stand and I knew I wouldnt be able to sleep that night if I wouldn't have stopped to give him a ride. He had 4 huge bags of groceries, so I volunteered to help him, but he denied( he was very slow and took a longggg time to get the stuff in, but I was patient). So i let him do it the first time. Then when getting off, I offered again, he said no, but this time I just couldn't stand seeing him panting his way to get the bags, because I was imagining his clogged arteries giving him a hard time with circulation under that kind of pressure. So I picked up the other two bags and placed it on his driveway. He got so pissed and said that he didn't like people touching his stuff because they turn it upside down. I swear, I did it more intactly than he did it himself. He did thank me after all that. phew. But then I was like whatever, Atleast I did not hold the guilt of not offering help for another 6 days....

hey, if you can get a free apartment in La Jolla, that's pretty cool. just dress conservatively and be polite, i'm sure you'll do fine. good luck...

If I were interviewing for the job, I'd show that I'm a great listener. I would let them speak, ask the gal about herself and her experiences, and then just absorb it all. Pause before you respond so that you've made sure there isn't anything more she would like to say... And smile!
I'm sure if this is the right "job" for you, you'll be a perfect fit and know exactly what to do!
***I almost said knock em' dead*** I'm going to veto that phrase with this situation, though. So Good Luck! 😀

Hmmm... if I were looking for someone to live with my mother... clean and tidy in physical appearance and dress with the hope that keeping one's room tidy will follow, on time for the appointment, a willingness to do things "mom's way" and to bend to her wishes (if certain cups are for tea and others are for coffee, don't mix them up or act like it doesn't matter), good listener. A willingness to follow the "house rules" no matter how restrictive they may seem (no loud music or TV after 10 pm or before 8 am), no showers after 10 pm (too loud), no overnight visitors.

You might also want to find out exactly what would be expected for "dinner". It might be more than sandwiches.
